Happy new year! May your 2020 be a year filled with prosperity, joy and a bucket load of blessings!

While we're a few days into the year already, let's go back to the start. Over 30-31 Dec 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to join the AFROPUNK team for the Joburg Festival as an official photographer!

To be quite honest, I don't think my year could have ended or started any better. It was only a blessing to be caught in a whirlwind of energy shared by so many beautiful people and their personal expressions while creating alongside some industry greats and talented youthful individuals from across South Africa.

My work involved capturing the people and faces of Afropunk Joburg which was featured on the official Instagram account as well as capturing the numerous mesmerising performances.
Here's a look at some of those moments!

AFROPUNK is a meeting of the minds and creative spirits centered around the artists who help us endure throughout the year with their music. While every part of our festival and each person who enters our space contributes to the undeniably beautiful vibe, the live performers are the heartbeat that....

Just a few more days until the 2019 edition of Rocking the Daisies kicks off! Feels like a good time to reflect on some memories made last year!

Here's a visual diary of images captured through a disposable camera:

Disposable film images from a South African festival

Rocking the Daisies took place just outside Cape Town, South Africa from October 5-7 2018. The event hosted around 20000 people across three different stages that catered to a diversity of genres like alternative and rock music (Main Stage), house and electronic music (Oasis Stage) as well as hip hop and beats (Soulection Motel).

This is a collection of 35mm film images captured via disposable camera.

Another batch of images from my family's trip to Spain earlier this year!
"Nunca es tarde para aprender" was something that stuck with me during this whole journey, it translates to 'it's never too late to learn'.

One thing i definitely took away from this man is that you should remember why you started doing what you do - creativity or otherwise.

One of the things I love most about Moonchild is the way they craft their basslines. From slick licks to rhythmic grooves, but always smooth. Oohhh and the chords slap, I can’t forget those chooorrdddsss 🤤🤤

I remember someone in the press conference asked the band whether there was any song in history that they wished they made.. Amber and Andris replied with D’Angelo songs, and suddenly I just felt hella warm in that moment.

There were so many stank faces being thrown around in this performance, it was beauty to behold 😂🔥

I was fortunate enough to have met the whole band the day before their performance and I took home some real food for thought that evening. I came back the following evening to watch their performance and we were straight up feasting. 🤯
Nubya spoke of establishing community which lends itself to creation with an air of necessity and an emphasis on organic growth. It still hits home because I still struggle to figure out what’s natural and what’s being forced.
Sam got me thinking along similar lines, speaking about how it’s important to be present and trying to engage with new things, places and experiences. 🌱

So far the road’s been open and freeThere were a couple of tolls, I've had a couple of feesCouple of times I’ve been on a couple of kneesWishing for a couple of hours or even minutes of peaceHead spinning from the turbulent seaScanning the horizon for a little faith in my breedPlacing my feet among the space I’m making my sleepHoping the path I’m on is really destined for me

You may have come across this man’s talented touch without knowing it. Often working with artists like Jordan Rakei, Tom Misch and Barney The Artist, Alfa Mist is a master of the keys and definitely knows how to hold his own on the mic.
Structuralism, his newest project, dropped a few days after this performance and left me in awe. It’s a serious flex in terms of composition and arrangements, cinematic brass meets moody chords and percussive layers come together to take you on a journey.
I can’t even front, I definitely shed a tear or two during this performance - thanks for blessing us 🙏🏽❤️
