Please note, I do not rescue cats, nor do I have a cat sanctuary, nor do I go out and feed feral cats.

Over the past while I have had a few people asking me about my "work with cats" and how they can donate towards it.

So it is another guy also on the Bluff by the name of Warren who is working with cats, NOT me.

I love cats, but in their place, I rather leave any further opinion off of Facebook.

I will happy except any donations towards my snake catching work though:

This is the full moon taken on the 1st May 2026

The phrase "once in a blue moon" means an event happens very rarely. Its origin stems from the 16th-century expression "the moon is blue," which people used to describe something completely impossible or absurd. Over centuries, its meaning shifted to indicate something rare but possible.

The moon never turns blue. It's called a blue moon when we have 2 full moons in a month, which is a very rare thing to happen. Tonight's full moon is the second full moon this month.

My wife and I visited the Hluhluwe area of KZN between the 14th and 17th May, primarily to spend some time exploring the Hluhluwe/Imfolozi nature Reserve.
I can't believe that I had never been there before.

It was the most enjoyable experience with loads of wildlife to be seen. We were fortunate enough to see 4 of the big 5.

We will definitely be back to this amazing place.

Whenever I am at the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve in Durban, I always like going to look for Picasso bugs, and I have photographed hundreds of them over the years, but the other day I saw something I have not seen before. A Picasso bug that had just shed its nymph skin into an adult. It was still very pale in colour, wet and vulnerable.
I have included a picture of what they look like when they are properly dried and their shell is hard again.

When or where does the indiscriminate killing and destroting of things we dont understand, end?

I am fast becoming disheartened in sharing any of my stories about snakes, because as I gain more followers, I also gain a lot of haters that just say kill, KILL...!! so I ask where does it end? For example:

There are quite a few people in this world that are deathly allergic to bees, one bee sting can literally be life threatening. And more than 20 stings can also be life threatening to anyone, even though they are not allergic.
So then, for this fact, should all bees be killed?
I think most of us are taught enough in school to know this is a bad idea for all life on planet earth.

Yet why do so many just want to kill any and every snake that they see? With a world of credible information at the tip of your finger you can find out a ton of information regarding anything imaginable, there is no excuse to say but I didn't know.

We have all heard of the Hantavirus that's been all over the news lately. Did you know its spread through rodents? Ever heard of the Bubonic plague? Also spread by rodents. And yet we want to kill every natural enemy of the rodent. Owls and snakes are top predators of rodents, yet people so willingly kill these because of myth and legend.

Wake up before its too late.

If you in the Durban area and care enough to have a snake relocated rather than killing it, please give me a call:

Black Mamba, the most feared snake in Africa, but just like all other snakes, they are harmless if you leave them alone.

Considering the amount of Black Mambas that we have living in the natural areas of Durban, very few bites happen every year and most of those bites happen to people who try to interfere with the animal, either trying to kill or catch it, very very few bites happen by accident, ie: wrong place wrong time.

Likes, comments and shares are most welcome.

My wife and I had just sat down to have a nice lunch at Alfresco Cafe at Hillside Mall on the Bluff when my phone rang.
A rather stressed sounding gentleman phoned, saying he stayed at the residences within the Albert Luthuli hospital grounds, he said he was looking at a huge Black Mamba, they trying to keep it contained but it can move, can I get there ASAP.

There goes our nice lunch, but this was a call I was hoping for this weekend since getting myself a new, redesigned snake tong from ASI, I was dying to try it out.
We got in the car and raced to the hospital as fast as was safe. Fortunately a security guy had spotted the snake in the garden and actually followed it, for quite a while from a safe distance while trying to get hold of a snake catcher, apparently a few had been called but were not coming, then I was called and responded within 10 minutes. All the security had been told of what was going on, so the way in was made very easy for us.

When we arrived we were told the snake was around the corner but we must first go upstairs and check where it is, we went and looked, I immediately saw it was indeed a huge snake, right at the top of a flight of stairs. I had to approach from the bottom of the stairs. As I climbed the stairs I was worried that the snake would see me coming and would bolt down the stairs/slope. When I reached the top I saw the snake was actually trying to get into the building and was climbing up the glass, even with people on the other side. Fortunately the way the snake was it could not see me coming till it was too late, making for a very easy (if you well trained) catch.

I walked down the stairs to show the staff of the hospital, letting some safely touch and get a deeper appreciation of the animal before putting it in the bucket.

Thank you to my wife for the understanding and being my partner in crime and camera lady, I was so in the zone that I did not even notice her behind me filming.
Also thanks for ASI for giving me a new set of snake tongs at a much reduced price. They are nice and light and strong, made of a nylon glass composite.

This snake is the biggest Mamba I have caught in my career, 2.73 meters long and weighing a whopping 3.750kgs.

My wife and I went for a picnic yesterday afternoon at the Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve. We were just finishing lunch when my phone rang for what the caller said was a Green Mamba in his mom's garden on the Bluff.
After having heard the "Green Mamba" story thousands of times and almost always catching harmless snakes, of course I was a little hesitant to pack up our picnic for another Spotted Bush Snake. BUT, pictures soon followed and indeed it was a Green Mamba.

We cut our picnic short, threw everything in the car and off we went. When we arrived at the house we found a young lady halfway up a Löffelstein wall, rake in hand, making sure the Green Mamba was not going anywhere. It was a fairly easy catch.

It was a smallish Green Mamba, only about 1.5 meters in length, it has since been released as far from humans as conservationly possible.

Thank you to the people for calling and not just killing this beautiful animal, and thank you to my wife for her understanding and willingness to drop everything at a moments notice and being my camera lady.
