Spider magic. So tiny her thorax was lass than a cm across.

She had spun her overnight orb-web in middle earth between the trees and the ground. The morning sun beat so that the air was fidgeting and blowing her net gently.

Time to pack up. She shimmied a short way down the longest radial that was attached to the ground and bit it. Like an elastic band it bounced her back up and folded the web which she then ingested and disappeared from my view into the tree.

I wouldn’t have believed this myself but I just read a fabulous book on the life and times of spiders. What’s not believable is how she makes this web so geometrically magical.

Practice is not the pursuit of perfection - it’s the discipline of showing up long enough for a bit of improvement to become inevitable……..mucking about with the elusive under-over setup using the rainbow guns (aka strobes) and a small very still object below a perfectly flat pool surface and my feet on the bottom. NONE of which happens in real life 😂😂😂 but it gets me right on some of the stuff I don’t need to be worrying about while chasing tiny sea animals into the sun on windswept seas

A South African Silver Long Jawed Orb weaver spider spins its web every morning. If you scare her she simply drops off her web into the undergrowth below with a trail of silk and climbs back up later. She sits for hours with her paws on the stretched radial silks of her web to feel any vibrations. Her pounce was so quick I couldn’t see it, using her back legs to wrap silk around the insects legs incapacitating it before burying her fangs into its abdomen. She paralyses the hapless victim and wraps it a bit more before assigning it a tomb and returning to the origin of the web once more. I lay on the chalet deck watching a few of these ladies for the morning (photo thanks ) …. Mumbling to the grandkids that if you want a job at Nat Geo you have to do the hard yards and play the long game. Love a good stake-out.

The Lion fish. Strangely oriental shape shifters, they are voracious predators of other reef fish, so successful that if the upstream foodchain is weak they overpopulate and obliterate reef life. They are mesmerising to watch, so many beautiful moving parts. I decided to do a stylised Linocut print for Christmas tags this year.

A short Dox (teeny tiny documentary) on the amazing sea brothers of the Kosi aquarium. We stayed at Rick and Elize’s wonderful little lodge house tucked into the forest and went snorkelling with brothers Simon and Fanu. .
