I've been meaning to write this for a while. It starts in a small village in Wicklow, takes a detour through London and Tokyo, and ends up — eventually — in Africa with a camera.

Part One is live. I'd love to know if it resonates.

How a chance find in a London bookshop, a Don McCullin photograph and a copy of Getaway magazine in Tokyo set an Irishman on the road to Africa — and to a life in fine art wildlife photography.

Some encounters don’t announce themselves.

They arrive like a breath held too long.

Fever Tree Leopard was photographed in Lake Nakuru, beneath the soft curve of a broken fever tree limb bending low toward the earth.

A young leopard had slipped into the tall grass moments earlier. Gone completely. No sound, no movement, just absence.

So I waited.

And then, like something carried on the wind, she returned.

Emerging slowly through the golden afternoon light, she moved with that effortless silence only leopards possess, part shadow, part presence, fully aware of everything and nothing all at once.

This frame was built on instinct, patience, and timing. The kind of moment you don’t chase, you surrender to.

One frame. One chance.

Shortlisted, Sony World Photography Awards 2025.

A quiet reminder of why leopards remain one of the most elusive and captivating subjects in Africa.
