A wonderful three days spent exploring Langebaan and Paternoster, with the magnificent lagoon stealing the show. The sheer beauty of this area is something special, from the endless vistas to the incredible diversity of birdlife. Caspian terns, red-eyed mousebirds, flamingos, pied kingfishers and so many more made every outing memorable. Nature at its finest, reminding us just how privileged we are to experience these remarkable places.

At Langebaan Lagoon, Greater Flamingos have a fascinating way of finding food. They wade through the shallow water, using their long legs to stomp their feet rapidly in the soft mud. This action disturbs the sediment and stirs up tiny organisms, algae, small crustaceans and other edible creatures hiding beneath the surface. As the mud and water are agitated, the flamingos sweep their specially shaped bills through the cloudy water, filtering out the nutritious morsels. Often feeding in groups, hundreds of flamingos can be seen rhythmically marching and stomping together. It is an incredible natural spectacle and a highly effective feeding technique. West coast is so vastly different to the East Coast.

What an incredible and unexpected sighting off Glengariff today! šŸ‹ Three Orcas were swimming past the house, just 400 metres offshore. My neighbour, Ria de Jager, phoned to say she was convinced she had just seen Orcas passing her home. Naturally, I had to investigateā€”and sure enough, there they were! Three magnificent Orcas cruising through the calm coastal waters, completely at home in their ocean environment. What a privilege to witness these powerful and intelligent predators so close to shore. You never quite know what might appear in front of the houseā€”one day Southern Right whales, the next, Orcas! Glengariff never disappoints.
