While I was in Zambia, my wife and son watched the 2025 Amashova Race being run. A large number of cyclists chose to wear the Hero777 shirt, which promotes Organ Donation and the “Call to Action” to register as a potential Organ Donor.

We are grateful to the Cycle Team from Maritzburg College who cycled the Amashova race wearing the Hero777 cycle shirt. A month later (20th July 2025), the team was back in Durban riding in the KZN Schools Mountain Biking Series at the Waterfall College. One of the cycle team members had been tragically killed in a motorbike accident a few weeks before Amashova, and the team wore a yellow patch on their backs with angel wings in remembrance of him.

Thanks to Kerry Bartholomew, the Head of Cycling at Maritzburg College, for the invitation to the day. Here are some photos from the day, and the album (below) has more! Please tag riders that you know in the album.

Day 5 of the St Lucia trip was a time to pack up and go, but we wanted to see the beach sunrise. So, Luke, Journee and I went out early in the morning to the beach. The clouds ON the horizon didn’t allow for a spectacular orange morning sunrise, but I got some lovely photos anyway!

Day 4 of the St Lucia trip was a visit to the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. We had not seen rhinos or elephants up close, and we were sure we would see them in the Wetland Park – after al,l we had seen them there before. Again, with the high rains, there were puddles and pans everywhere, we saw a lot of water birdlife, but few animals!! Maybe next time!

Day 3 of our visit to St Lucia, was a “Hippo and Croc” boat cruise on the river. Our skipper was an excellent guide, but the high rains and lack of sea water salt in the estuaries meant that the wild grass had populated the shores and the sand banks, so all the animals were, sadly, in the water. Tough photography, but we had a good day.

This past week, Matthew was on leave from Chef School, and my wife has been eager to revisit the iMfolozi Game Reserve—to see the animals and for me to take photographs. So, we booked accommodation in St Lucia for the weekdays, took Luke out of school, and on Day 1, set off on holiday on Monday, 12th May. Joining our family of four were Elizabeth (the boys’ Nana), Kate Farrer (a family friend), and Journee Postman (a friend of Matthew’s from Chef School). This and the next three posts are photos from the various days. Here are the photos from Day 2, the visit to the Imfolozi Park, on Tuesday 13th May:

Memorial Park in Kloof was established on 4 April 1945 on land that was donated by the Hickman and Johnson families in memory of their sons who were killed in World War II. In 2005, Kloof Conservancy initiated a rehabilitation project to convert the park into an indigenous habitat and provide the Kloof community with a recreational facility that they could enjoy. The objective was to create a natural habitat where residents would have open spaces for their children and pets to play. It's has become a place where the residents of the area bring their dogs to socialise.

The Highway Camera Club organised an outing to the park this morning and three Huskies were brought along to be the focus of attention. The weather was a little damp and overcast, but it was a great morning for photos. However, the park had a lot more canine visitors than just the huskies, and here are some of the pictures that I took this morning.

Since I started photography, Portrait Photography has been a genre close to my heart. So, I determined that this year, I would like to do at least one studio shoot every two months with a specific theme. (More, if possible!) Capturing the essence of a person and their unique character is an art I deeply enjoy.

So this shoot was trying to create a "moody feel" as my - "Round One of 2025". I met Skye at some of the photoshoots I did at Sven's Workshops and some of the SPCA Fashion events. We worked well together then, and working with an experienced model like Skye for this photo session, made for a fun experience. Her ease in front of the camera made for a great set of photos. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I enjoyed creating them!

Having a chicken coup has the advantage of getting fresh eggs, but it also brings with it several other visitors who view the chickens as a meal. Last year we were visited by a juvenile crown eagle, but the fellow that has been making quite a nuisance of himself lately is this Yellow Billed Kite and this morning he was back! They are very agile fliers, and despite the netting and fencing, they still (on occasions) manage to sneak in for a quick meal. It’s a beautiful bird and I was very pleased to photograph wildlife in my backyard!

Still, in Kilombero, Tanzania, I was walking to dinner when I noticed this tree with a massive amount of flowers under it. I did some research and found out that its an indigenous tree called the Kigelia Africana, (colloquial name of the Sausage Tree) whose flower blooms at night (for a few hours) and then falls off in the morning. So that night, out with the camera and a SMALL Olympus on camera flash (the size of a match box) I decide to photograph the story. In the first image, you can see a few buds coming, an opening flower- which will probably open tonight, a flower in bloom last evening (and fell off this morning) and a flower that died and fell off the morning before – quite a nice summary.

Many insects come in the night to sample from the flowers, like this Walker's Owl Moth (Known as an Erebus Walkeri), and of course, the bats come to eat the inserts. Couldn't get a photo of the bats!! I have also taken another photo of the same branch of the tree the next morning, as well as what the floor looks like!
