At birth, hyena babies are small, blind, and covered in a
fine layer of fur. They spend their first few weeks in a
secluded den, under the watchful eyes of their mother
and the clan. As they grow, their playful antics and
developing personalities start to shine through.

Hyena cubs are quick learners. They begin exploring
the world around them and gradually start to exhibit
their hunting and social skills. The adults in the clan,
especially the females, play a crucial role in their
upbringing, teaching them the ropes of hyena society
and survival in the wild. The females play an important
role as they are the leaders of the clan, displaying
strong bonds and cooperative behaviour essential for
their survival and success in the African savannah.

I just love how the colour of the sunset combines with the Drakensberg mountains and just brings focus to these two stunning giraffes.

Fun fact, did you know that giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans, which is, of course, 7.

Elephant breeding herds.🐘

An elephant breeding herd typically consists of several adult females and their offspring, led by the oldest and most experienced matriarch. The matriarch plays a crucial role in guiding the herd to water and food sources and protecting them from potential threats.

The bond between members of the breeding herd is exceptionally strong. Young elephants learn vital life skills from their mothers and other female relatives, including communication, foraging techniques, and how to navigate their environment.

Interestingly, these herds are not fixed and may form and dissolve depending on environmental factors and resources. Yet, within each herd, the sense of unity and empathy is truly heart-warming.

Have you seen a buffalo indulging in a mud bath? It may seem like a peculiar sight, but there's a fascinating reason behind this behaviour. These impressive creatures are not just getting dirty for fun; rather, they are engaging in a behaviour that benefits their health and well-being.

The mud baths serve as a form of natural grooming for African buffaloes. The process begins when the buffalo wallows, which is the term used to describe their mud-bathing activity. They kneel or lie down in shallow pools of water or mud and use their powerful bodies to roll around, coating themselves with the thick, wet mixture.

One of the primary reasons behind this behaviour is the relief it provides from various irritants that plague the buffalo's skin. These irritants can include ticks and other parasites that latch onto the buffalo's body. The thick layer of mud acts as a protective barrier, helping to deter these pests and providing much-needed relief from itching and irritation.

This boy was definitely striking a pose!

The dwarf mongoose - Helogale parvula

Have you ever seen one of these guys on safari?

Dwarf mongooses live in groups that we call troops, not always easy to be spotted in the long grass. Dwarf mongooses have a highly hierarchical social system, where the alpha male and alpha female take the lead in making crucial decisions. However, their leadership style is not based on fear or aggression but on a more nurturing approach. They provide guidance and protection to their troop members, creating an environment of trust.

Also, these little guys are the smallest carnivore in Africa and one of the smallest carnivores in the world only weighing about 210 to 350 grams.

The Pel’s Fishing Owl is a large species of owl in the Strigidae family. It feeds nocturnally on fish and frogs snatched from the surface of lakes and rivers. The species prefers slow-moving rivers with large overhanging trees to roost and forage from, and they haunt the deeper pools of meandering rivers in riverine forest areas. It nests in hollows and the forks of large trees. Though two eggs are laid, only one chick is raised.
