PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography has been a passion since my teens, when I was first introduced to the form by a friend, Geoff, and with another, Bill, would go off on early morning jaunts to take pictures.
Still living at home I converted my mom’s pantry into a darkroom, and after finishing working night shift would return, and start printing until dawn, when my father arose for breakfast.
In 1973 I took it further by completing a course at the Ruth Prowse School of Art, with Ray Ryan (photography) and Erik Laubscher (composition) as my teachers. I took a further course at Ealing College in London some years later.
The early morning expeditions were also part of Ray Ryan’s philosophy, to benefit from the best light. He also liked to focus on old Cape architecture, which I believe planted the seed for my later interest (see https://issuu.com/orcharddesign/docs/bokaap_to_bokaroo).
Living in Riebeek Kasteel I had the opportunity to take part in many west coast joint exhibitions, from Eight Eclectics at the Barn, the annual show at Steenbokfontein near Lamberts Bay, twentyfourteen in Darling, Solo Studios at the Riebeek Valley Museum and one at Orms, Cape Town, in aid of Young in Prison (YIPSA).
Today my old collection of cameras, light metres, filters, films (negative and slide), darkroom equipment (film processer, enlarger), slide viewer, projector, my first digital camera are housed in the Riebeek Valley Museum. They tell the story of a photographic evolution during my lifetime.
