Finding a beautiful outdoor portrait location in Centurion is harder than it sounds.
Most people end up in a public park with dog walkers, joggers and strangers in the background. Or they find somewhere beautiful but feel uneasy about safety. Or the kids need a bathroom and there isn't one for three kilometres.
I hear this all the time.
My studio is inside Cornwall Hill Estate in Irene - a private, gated community with a riverine woodland, open garden, water-filled quarry and densely wooded terraces that look like they were designed for portraits. Because of the estate's natural biodiversity, no two sessions ever look the same.
Clean facilities on site. A coffee shop on the premises. Secure parking. And nobody walking into your shot.

I've been editor of Cornwall View - our local estate magazine - for over ten years.
When Covid hit, the printed copies stopped. We took it fully digital for the first time and printed large A0 posters around the estate to announce the launch issue, and, the quality of the images had to be perfect.
What I remember most about that time wasn't the magazine. It was our community. People volunteering their kitchens, cooking daily meals, delivering food to the workers who chose to stay on the estate rather than go home.
I was there with my camera to record it all (anything to get out of the house !) and I'm constantly reminded that, that's what photography does, it puts you exactly where things are happening.

22 PORTRAITS IN 77 MINUTES!

I recently worked with a corporate board in Centurion on a project that required two very specific sets of images: 11 individual executive headshots and a high-end team group photo.

Most boardrooms simply don’t have the physical space to pose a large group of people while maintaining professional studio lighting. To solve this, my process involves photographing each director individually in a 3/4 length pose. I then composite these separate portraits together in Photoshop to create a seamless group shot.

This process not only looks superior but also eliminates the stress of coordinating everyone’s schedule at once. (In fact, we can even do this over consecutive days to accommodate executives who can’t be there on a specific day!)

The plan was to do the headshots early and the group poses during a tea break. But of course nothing goes exactly to plan: the CEO decided to move the composite portraits into the early slot to get everything finished before their board meeting!

Fortunately we have learned over the years to keep our cool and because of the tried and trusted portrait system Karla (my assistant, stylist, makeup artist, and youngest daughter! ) and I use, we didn't skip a beat!

By 8:33 AM - just 77 minutes after our first shot at 7:16 AM - all 22 setups were complete and the board meeting started right on time. Every director approved their images on the iPad on the spot, Karla ensured every styling detail was taken care of, and the client walked away with a perfect library of images.
