Caught this morning's eclipse but the shots didn't turn out how I'd hoped. This evening was better, and I also managed the dart along Joburg's dodgy streets from Florida for the first picture to UJ for the second. Working street lights could help with the drive.

Full moon in July, of my favourite moon-and-skyline setting. Known as the Buck Moon in the Northern Hemisphere, and locally as the Meerkat Moon (South Africa has its own set of heritage Full Moon names).

The bluer shot was taken on the actual night of the full moon (last night), but the sky was a bit murky and clouds got in the way. The golden-orange shots were taken tonight from Northcliff - the higher one from a different spot, to get the moon closer to the tower.

The Strawberry Moon rising over Johannesburg — 6 minutes, three different moods.

Shot from Northcliff Hill, these three shots were taken just 6 minutes apart as the full moon climbed above the Hillbrow and its tower. Some clouds came along for the show as well

Not every shot goes according to plan, but tonight the cherry was on top - the moon from Northcliff was stunning, and Joburg's skyline was showing off as usual.

Back in September 2025, Johannesburg was treated to a total lunar eclipse - and the Blood Moon rising next to the Hillbrow Tower did not disappoint. 🔴🌕
This short timelapse was shot from Northcliff, watching the moon turn deep red as it passed through Earth's shadow. An incredible sight that reminded me why I love night photography in this city.
No filter. No edit. Just physics putting on a show.

It's been a while, but it's always great to watch the moon appear close to the Hillbrow Tower and Ponte, photographed from Northcliff, Johannesburg.

Info for the techies: This is the Flower Moon, but strictly speaking, it's not the exact Full Moon — that peaked last night (when it was cloudy). Tonight it's in the waning gibbous phase but still ~99% illuminated. There's another full moon on 31 May — a rare double full moon in one month — so hopefully the weather plays along!
