This is something I’ve dreamt of for so long. Seeing her for myself felt surreal. She is stunningly beautiful, strong with a velvet coat and piercing yellow eyes. We picked her up in lovely evening light on our first drive, and then again this morning 💙

Giza Mrembo…The Beautiful Darkness. Never has a name been more appropriate.

Words can’t fully describe the first time you see Giza. A shadow moving across the Laikipia landscape, her velvet coat dark is as night. The occasional ray of sunshine catches her coat at just the right angle to reveal those beautiful rosettes under the melanistic fur. Then she opens those eyes and a wave of emotion takes over. She walks slowly, aware that she stands out in the tawny colours of the bush, but also in an assured manner. She’s the center of attention and she knows it. For a brief moment I force my eyes away from the beautiful darkness and observe the people on the other game viewer. They too, are misty eyed…completely awestruck.

In that moment, you realize that it was all worth it. The flights, the long waits, the transfers and the bumpy roads. A dream is realized. Giza Mrembo indeed.

When the Dik Dik realized that the shadow is moving!!!!

This little antelope takes preventative action in the nick of time. It was on a fatal path when it realized that the shadow in the Laikipia bushveld is actually Giza, the black leopard 😲.
