The Nathaniel B. Palmer is no longer on charter with the NSF, leaving the U.S. without a dedicated Antarctic research icebreaker. For decades, the Palmer supported critical polar science in some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Its departure creates a real gap in capability and raises serious questions about the future of U.S. presence and leadership in Antarctic research.

Scientists said the loss hinders their work and diminishes America’s leading presence on the continent. The NSF said it continues to support Antarctic research.
