What happens when passion meets opportunity beneath the surface? 🌊📹🐋

Hear from Aaron Warner, one of our previous Africa Media Underwater Filmmaking students, as he shares his experience exploring the world beneath the waves and developing the skills to tell powerful ocean stories.

With the Sardine Run season in full swing, there’s no better time to dive into the art of underwater videography. From understanding marine environments to capturing breathtaking moments below the surface, our students gain hands-on experience in one of the most exciting filmmaking disciplines on the planet.
Every great underwater filmmaker starts somewhere. Aaron’s journey is proof that with the right training, dedication, and adventure, incredible opportunities await. 🎥

Fun Fact: The Sardine Run is often called “The Greatest Shoal on Earth” and attracts dolphins, sharks, whales, seals, and thousands of seabirds in one of nature’s most spectacular feeding events. 🐟

Types of Dolphin sounds:

Like other toothed whales, spinner dolphins utilize two main categories of vocalizations for communication and navigation:

Signature Whistles: These are highly individualized, tonal frequency whistles that act like human names. A dolphin uses its own unique whistle so other members in the pod can identify and call out to it.

Burst-Pulse Sounds: These consist of rapid, closely spaced clicks that sound like buzzes, squawks, or barks. Researchers believe these bursts convey emotional context, excitement, and aggression.

Echolocation Clicks: While primarily used for hunting and mapping their surroundings, these rapid clicking sounds can also convey spatial information to other dolphins nearby.

The Purpose of Their “Speech”?

Coordinating Hunts: Because spinner dolphins forage on lanternfish in massive pods at night, their vocalizations help them track schools of fish and communicate diving or herding strategies to one another.

Social Bonding: Constant whistling and burst-pulse noises keep the pod connected, ensuring that members don’t get lost in the open ocean or separated from their calves.

DID YOU KNOW?!
The first underwater photograph was taken by William Thompson in 1856 using a specially designed camera setup in Weymouth Bay, UK.

HOW?!
Thompson created a waterproof wooden box to house his camera, which was mounted on a tripod. He lowered the camera into the water to a depth of about 18 feet (5.5 meters) using a rope. The exposure time for this photograph was approximately 10 minutes, during which the camera was submerged. Although the resulting image was not very clear, it marked a significant technical achievement in photography.

Each zebra has a distinctive stripe pattern, much like a human fingerprint, which helps in individual recognition and may deter biting insects, regulate body temperature, and provide camouflage against predators. Contrary to popular belief, zebras are black with white stripes, as their underlying skin is predominantly black. There are three main species: the plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra, and mountain zebra.

Zebras are highly social animals, living in groups called harems or herds. This social structure provides protection from predators through collective vigilance and coordinated movements. Zebras can run up to 65 km/h (40 mph). Their nearly 360-degree vision and strong night vision help detect threats. Zebras typically live 20–30 years in the wild and longer in captivity. Conservation status varies: Grevy’s zebra is endangered, mountain zebra is vulnerable, and plains zebra is near-threatened, with threats including habitat loss, poaching, and disease.

These remarkable traits make zebras not only visually striking but also highly adapted to survive in the challenging African wilderness.
