A selection of photos from my quick visit to the Big Hole at Kimberley today.

Besides the human achievement of creating such a huge cavity, the surrounding historical village is fascinating. I’m told public support isn’t as good as it used to be (which is a pity) but that can (and hopefully will) improve.

The beautiful Freestate province this morning - very moody skies and wet landscapes en route to OR Tambo airport today. So pretty 😍

These photos were taken between Memel and Vrede with the last photo taken before the on-ramp to the N3 by the Frankfort / Vrede off-ramp / on-ramp. Anyone know the name of the flat mountain by this turnoff? Would be keen to know….

**Update - the mountain is (unsurprisingly) called “Tafelkop” (thank you Morne Pretorius for clearing that up for me)**

Storm season has officially started here in Newcastle KZN. This was 2 & 1/2 minutes of lightning that I captured earlier as the first storm passed over the town.

Flowering Kalanchoes currently gracing our garden. I couldn't resist capturing a few of them to share as a collage. Their colours are just incredible and these succulent, water wise flowers make a great addition to most gardens. They are mostly native to Madagascar and Africa.

Interestingly besides having a range of traditional medicinal uses, a Kalanchoe was one of the first plants to be sent into space on a re-supply rocket to the Soviet Salyut 6 space station in 1976. It seems if I am not photographing the stars, I am photographing plants that were sent to the stars ;)

A deeper look at the Prawn Nebula (IC4628) and nearby open clusters NGC6231, NGC6242 and NGC6268.

Last night was relatively clear which enabled me to gather around 3 and 1/2 hours of data with the SeeStar S30 Pro. This part of the sky is really beautiful to observe and photograph. It forms part of the "Table of Scorpius" located in the constellation Scorpius.

A pretty Sun Halo (or 22° halo) currently above Newcastle KZN.

The high altitude clouds that are causing this are starting to thin out so it might not be visible for much longer but if you are in Newcastle or surrounding areas, aim you mobile phone camera towards the sun and snap a photo.

A beautiful part of the sky - the "table of Scorpius" with the cluster NGC 6231, The Prawn Nebula (IC 4628) and the bright orange giant star ζ² Sco nicely visible.

I will be putting more effort into this section of the sky soon (when weather allows for it) but for now, I think this is such pretty celestial moment

A wide field and cropped starless image of the Statue of Liberty / Torch Bearer nebula (NGC 3576).

Captured with my Celestron RASA8 and ZWO294mc Pro camera from Newcastle, South Africa. Located over 8000 light years from us, this popular celestial object is always awesome to image.
