This evenings waxing gibbous moon (84.4% illuminated fraction) as it moves through the constellation Libra. I created a composite image of the moon and then of the stars and combined them into one image.

A fledgling Cape sugarbird (Promerops cafer) that was calling to its parents and flying (rather clumsily) between the flowering proteas and fynbos.

I loved the combination of colours of the flower with the fledgling bird

Flowering succulents that I had to photograph (the yellow flower belongs to a species of Kalanchoe and the pink one to a Crassula).

I found these beautiful, hairy ants feeding from emerging aloe flowers.

I am not an ant expert but I think they are known as “Hairy Sugar ants” (Camponotos niveosetosus) but stand to be corrected.

It was fascinating to watch them gently communicate with each other as they fed from the sweet nectar / sap that is oozing out of the aloe. The macro lens reveals so much detail with regard to their incredible morphology.

The Waxing Crescent moon before and after occulting the star Regulus (the first image was at sunset before the occultation and the second photo was later, after the occultation had occurred)

Really nice article about the astronomy evening that the Vryheid Honorary officers hosted the other night. I was the guest speaker at the event.

Despite cloudy skies, the Starry Night fundraiser in Vryheid inspired more than 80 while raising funds to improve the Vryheid Nature Reserve.
