A bit of fun with this evenings full, “Micro Blue” Moon 🙂

I moved around as the moon rose and took various photos using forced perspective and a couple of composite images to capture the moment.

Being the “smallest” full moon of the year (at its farthest point from Earth) and the second full moon in one month made this an even more special blue moon event. To me it was a stunning moonrise as usual which warranted capturing a few images. At 99.8% illuminated fraction, it was a sight to behold…

Here is some more information on the micro blue moon courtesy of earthsky: https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/when-is-the-next-blue-moon/

Also, in South Africa, the second full moon in the month of May is called a Fire Moon and you can read about it here: https://cfah.org.za/fullmoon/fire-moon/?fbclid=IwRlRTSASJVmdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEe4PSZGr9KTC19KA-uNFuTsd8nBXuPtCG9b4bfCCweqDm-TwfQdiwIym34uGE_aem_BOarbmabNwSueqCPNLxSzQ

A quick photo of this evenings waxing gibbous moon and an image of Comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) as it disappears into the darkness. Compared to how it looked on the 1st May, it is now very faint but still has a nice, colourful coma.

This Sunday, we will also have a blue full moon - this just means that the moon is full twice within one month and no, it won’t be blue in colour 🙂

Of course with all the Cirrus clouds up there right now, there was a pretty moon halo earlier 🙂

I only managed to snap a quick mobile phone photo of it before the clouds moved over and the halo disappeared, but here it is anyway.

Sunset today as the last rays of light caught a few of the clouds. Most evenings we have had haze / fine clouds in the sky which is making Astrophotography a challenge… hopefully the skies clear nicely soon 🤞🏻

Another sun halo (or 22° halo) that was visible today (albeit it a faint one). I also captured an airplane at high altitude with a contrail forming behind it as it passed through the halo (and near to the sun).

At such high altitudes, when atmospheric conditions are conducive, sun halos become visible and contrails often form….

In this case high altitude Cirrus clouds (with their suspended ice crystals) caused the sun halo effect and condensation from the jet caused the formation of artificial / human-made cirrus clouds - contrails form when hot, humid engine exhaust fumes mix with the cold, moisture-rich air in the upper atmosphere, causing water v***r to condense and instantly freeze into ice crystals creating an artificial Cirrus cloud.

I hope you enjoy the photos of yet another sun halo 🙂

A memory that popped up today from 2022 (when I captured this “golden” road between Wakkerstroom and Volkrust at sunrise).

The entire area was bathed in glorious early
morning sunlight - I am so glad I pulled over to photograph it.

The sky cleared sufficiently this evening for me to go exploring the heavens and given the bright waxing gibbous moon, it was obvious what I would be focusing on 😉

I quickly set up the Celestron SE8 and captured the following image with the Canon60Da and Celestron SE8 setup. As always, the Celestron optics produced a superb image and for a while we just observed the moon in all her glory while enjoying the cold, late autumn air..

A few moments from a short walk at Grey Goose Game Lodge with my little daughter this morning. We had a bite to eat first and then went looking for butterflies and other creatures. Was such pleasant weather and we were thrilled with what we saw.

I have put IDs under each photo as captions
