Rob Smith Photography

Rob Smith Photography Moments in Time That same spirit of exploration has shaped my photographic eye.

From the banks of the Kafue River in Northern Rhodesia in the 1960’s to the rugged beauty of Plettenberg Bay today, my photography has been guided by nature. Growing up on a farm with my older brother, we explored the African bush, absorbing its sights, sounds, and scents - experiences that began a lifelong passion for capturing the natural world. Whether capturing an evening’s light on the Robber

g Peninsula, the poise of an animal in the African bush or taking in the stillness of a Knysna indigenous forest, my images attempt to reveal both the beauty and the intimacy of the natural world. My work has been widely celebrated, with publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Getaway, GO and AfricanBirdlife publishing images. AfricanBirdlife recently named my photograph of mating Half-collared Kingfishers as one of the best published by the magazine the past two years. I've ben fortunate to have many fine-art images hang in homes in South Africa and across the world, collected by those who share my reverence for Africa’s natural world.

The magic of landscape photography happens when you discover a remote location where very few (if any) photographers have ever been before; a rising, full moon is perfectly placed to reflect off a rocky pool during the blue hour and incoming tidal waves provide distinctive waterfalls over a rocky outcrop. Oh, and I did mention inquisitive friends who wander over onto the high cliffs to see what is going on and witness a magical, once-in-a-lifetime scene?

Mindful of showing the darkish forest environments in which kingfishers live, here are some photos of Half-collared and Malachite kingfishers taken in and about Plettenberg Bay. p.s. it is very therapeutic spending time in a quiet forest alongside a small stream watching and photographing these little gems.

If Half-collared Kingfishers are my favourite birds to photograph, leopards are my favourite animals. They always look so relaxed and regal, surveying all they gaze upon as theirs.

Kingfishers have got to be one of the most photogenic birds to photograph. They make for colourful portraits as they perch over a stream, or in the case of Brown Hooded Kingfishers, a branch in a forest. Here are six species of the ten found in southern Africa. Any guesses as to the names of the six in this collection?

The Western Cape is the 4th largest province by size in South Africa and roughly the size of England. It has a 400 km coastline along the Atlantic Ocean (cold) and a 500 km coastline along the Indian Ocean (warm). It's terrain is diverse, ranging from the arid Karoo region to lush mountainous and coastal regions. These are some of my photos taken the past 17 years. And many a beautiful journey has been had.
