As I turned onto the gravel road, I rolled down my window to breathe in the dusty, earthy Karoo air.
I was driving solo, with just a coffee beside me and my camera on the passenger seat. Grondpaaie vat mens na lekker plekke - my mom has always said that - and it echoed in my mind as the landscape unfolded.

I began to notice the small details around me: the smell of sun on soil, blue cranes dotted across the veld, laundry flapping outside whitewashed houses. And somewhere along that gravel stretch, I realised how awake my senses were. How present I felt.

Photography has a way of doing that — slowing you down, inviting you to notice, to really see.
It’s not just about the final product; it’s the act of paying attention, being in tune with the world as it reveals itself to you. It is the art of seeing. A kind of mindfulness, one frame at a time.

We are now truly hurtling towards the end of the year. The fourth term is a whirlwind of prize givings, exams and end of year functions, while shop windows fill up with tinsel and fake snow.
But at least we have summer to look forward to!! Beach days, braais, late-night swims, the smell of sunscreen, and even the occasional game of backyard cricket with the family. 😁

So much of what we see online today seems a little “too perfect”, and seeing is not simply believing anymore. The world of AI is making us question if the photos are real, and we wonder if somebody’s words are truly their own…
And it is for this very reason that I want to capture what is real, honest and true. Family life is beautiful and chaotic, but it is exactly in this imperfection that we experience real love and connection that no filter or algorithm can replicate. It is the dirty dishes in the sink, the pile of unfolded laundry, messy hair, or the folds of your body, earned from growing and nurturing your babies… these are the things that make us human. And we should celebrate all of it.
