Small moments matter just as much as the big sightings… and proves it every time.

I spent 10 minutes quietly watching this tiny bush Karoo rat going about its day, feeding on fruits, grooming, and moving through the bush with so much character. These little guys are the only rodents in Southern Africa known to build large oval “lodges” at the base of shrubs using sticks, twigs, and grass.

It’s a reminder that incredible wildlife stories aren’t only about the giants. Sometimes, they’re right at your feet.

never disappoints. From the smallest moments to the biggest sightings, there’s always something happening.

This Saturday was all about baboons, kudus, and buffalo. But the real highlight was this playful young baboon. He kept jumping up and down on a branch, completely in his own world… until he noticed me. For a second, it felt like he was about to say hello, then went right back to his game until the branch finally snapped and he ran off to join the rest of the troop.

Cloudy days like this are perfect for watching natural behaviour. Feeding, grooming, small fights, and endless interaction. This is the kind of wildlife storytelling that makes every visit unique.

The presence of a Tawny Eagle is truly imponente, especially when it’s your first time seeing one in the wild.

Tawny Eagles are highly adaptable birds of prey, found in savannah, semi-desert and open woodland. They’re opportunistic hunters and, unlike many eagles, often walk on the ground while feeding or even steal from other predators.

Want to photograph powerful raptors like this? Join us on 10 May for a 5 day immersive wildlife photography tour in Kruger National Park. Hands-on guidance, real safari conditions, and limited to just 6 photographers for a personalised experience.

10 percent of proceeds support wildlife conservation.

I had never photographed a Red-faced Mousebird before, and spotting this one in was such a special surprise. With its soft grey plumage, bright red face and that dramatic long tail, it is one of the most unique birds you can find in the Eastern Cape.

Red-faced Mousebirds are often overlooked in wildlife photography, but they have incredible character and behaviour, including the ability to hang upside down while feeding and conserve energy through torpor at night.

Addo never disappoints when it comes to bird photography in South Africa. From elephants to small feathered gems like this, every drive is a new discovery.

Hyenas are often labelled as part of the Ugly 5, but despite what many people think, they are not just scavengers. Spotted hyenas are highly intelligent, social predators and incredibly efficient hunters.

In fact, spotted hyenas have a hunting success rate of around 60 to 70 percent, which is higher than many other large African predators. They work as a coordinated clan, using strategy, stamina and communication to bring down their prey.

These two young spotted hyena pups were not too impressed with our presence. After carefully inspecting our safari vehicle and tyres, they calmly returned to their den to wait for breakfast.

One of the things I love most about wildlife photography is the constant growth. Every time I head out into nature, I learn something new about light, patience and animal behaviour.

This Grey Heron reflection shot was one of my dream bird photography moments. That calm water mirror effect I had visualised for so long.

Is it perfect? No.
Can it improve? Always.

But progress in nature photography is about showing up again and again until everything aligns.

What is your dream wildlife photo that you have captured or are still chasing?

Sometimes wildlife photography isn’t about action — it’s about observation.

Vervet monkeys are often known for being mischievous and playful, but this young one chose stillness. Hidden deep in the thicket, quietly watching the horizon, teaching a powerful lesson without even trying.

Moments like this remind me that wildlife photography is about patience, awareness, and learning to truly see — waiting, observing, and allowing nature to unfold on its own terms.

In the quiet, the wild reveals its stories.

Last November in Kruger National Park, we were incredibly fortunate to spend five consecutive days observing a powerful lion pride along the H3 and S110 🦁

From day two through to the morning of day five, we witnessed their behaviour up close — the bonds within the pride, their hierarchy, and the quiet strength that defines these iconic predators.

One lioness in particular captured my heart — an elderly matriarch I named Matilda. Hearing that she was seen again just last week by Monique from .sa , healthy and thriving, was truly special.

I’m looking forward to returning to Kruger on 10 May for our upcoming small-group wildlife photography safari, where moments like these are the reason we go into the wild.
