I am a loving family man, blessed to live on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. I have spent many years traveling around South Africa and enjoying the adventure of visiting destinations in our beautiful country. After leaving school, I joined the South African Police Force where I had to deal with horrific scenes on a daily basis, scenes that I would not like to remember. I left the police and joined

the corporate world where I was introduced to the amazing world of technology and website design. Frustrated with poor photos for websites, I bought a camera and fell in love with the art of photography. Finding photography, created a happy place, a place where I could meet people and create memories. I have been behind the camera for almost two decades documenting love stories and families. I look forward to being part of your journey, a journey of friendship and memories. Visited my website to view my portfolio - www.seanvantonder.co.za

Not every session needs golden hour. Sometimes an overcast afternoon gives you exactly what you need - soft light, no distractions, and real people just being themselves.

This family travelled all the way from the Northern Cape to spend some time in Margate, and they brought that Northern Cape energy with them. You know the kind - quiet, genuine, unshakeable.

The brother-sister dynamic in these frames stopped me. No forced smiles. Just a steady, protective kind of love between two kids who clearly have each other's backs.

Grey skies, real moments. That's the session.

If you'd like to book a session and have your family's story told, my books are open. Send me a message and let's make it happen.

The Prinsloo Family. Ramsgate Beach, KZN South Coast.

We last stood together in 2020. In 5 years, the family has grown.

Working with young kids can be challenging. The little girl gave us everything for the first 20 minutes — and then she had had enough of taking direction.

That's what I love about kids. They have their own world to attend to. You can prepare, you can try to control the environment, but all you can do is stay present and capture the moments that matter.

How so got the shot….

I noticed the sun streaming past the rocks at Umzumbe and knew the angle was perfect. I had Bernadine lie down so the light hit her just right, then climbed the rock to shoot top - down.

Pro Tip: I placed my 70-200 lens hood under her head to elevate her head for a better perspective.

Legacy Portraits.

I first photographed this family 10 years ago, so I was truly honored when they reached out recently to update their family photos.

We met on a perfectly calm, overcast morning in Scottburgh to capture the whole family, including all the new additions. There’s something so special about seeing a family grow like this over a decade.

Mixed in with my signature lifestyle photos, these are meant to hang on the wall for the next 50 years.

These are more than just photos; this is their legacy.

Bernadine was stressed about the weather, but Umzumbe gave us a massive sunrise.

More than the forecast, she admitted she was was nervous. We used two outfit changes, mixing golden light and strobes for a unique aesthetic.

The best part? Watching her realize how incredible she truly looks.

Bernadine and Justin , thank you for trusting me and letting me document this chapter for you. You two were a dream.

Here’s a quick sneak peek of what we captured.

Weather predictions said torrential rain all day. But for Ruan and Anchen, the timing was perfect.

Ruan flew down from Gauteng on December 21st to propose at Sea Park on the KZN South Coast. With a picnic set up by his mum—roses, champagne, and fruit - the stage was set for a moment they’ll never forget. When he got down on one knee, the joy was unmistakable.

We spent the rest of the session capturing the story as it unfolded. From the family celebrations to just the two of them, enjoying the moment.

It was great to have Ruan in front of the lens for something a bit different than the usual rugby action. It was a privilege to document this milestone for them both.

The overcast sky ended up working in our favor, giving us a soft, even light across the beach. We finished just as the clouds broke, and by 5 PM, it was pouring and the South Coast experienced flooding. But their story was already safely captured.

Family Comes First - Even When Life Surprises Us

Family stories aren't always the ones you expect. When I arrived at Melissa's holiday house in Ramsgate, an ambulance was parked in the driveway.

Her dad had slipped and needed to go to the hospital. For a moment, the session felt uncertain.

But Melissa was traveling back to the US soon, and time together was precious. The family chose to go ahead - without Dad.

What unfolded was something special.

We started with a legacy family photo on the grass - all nine of them, beautifully lit despite the overcast sky. Then we moved to the beach for some real storytelling: a mom and her four daughters walking, laughing, reminiscing. Real moments. Real joy.

One thing I love about overcast days? The clouds act like a giant softbox, giving everyone a natural, flattering look.

Later that evening, I learned Dad was going to be okay. He was simply tired from the joy of having all his children together.

That's what this shoot was really about - family, love, and showing up for each other, even when plans change.

A little chaos is part of the story.

Sarah and her family were visiting South Africa and wanted family photos. They also had a few ideas of their own, so we planned to mix them all together.

Session day in Southbroom started off overcast, with no rain predicted (December on the KZN coast loves to keep us humble).

Halfway through the shoot, the heavens opened up, and it started pouring. We got absolutely soaked. Cameras, hair, outfits… everything.

We had to call it, sprint to our vehicles, and reschedule the rest for another day.

But I knew we’d finish it properly — and Sarah trusted the process.

Take two: sunshine, smiles, and a session that felt like the reward for surviving round one.

We had a lot of fun - and the photos were 100% worth the drama.

A little chaos is part of the story - and the memories we capture will be treasured.

Let’s create memories.
