Spotted this young pale-chanting goshawk perched and keeping a close eye on everything around it. Raptors often do this head-tilt to get a better depth read on whatever they’re observing, since their eyes are fixed in place. Such an interesting behavior to see up close!

There is nothing quite like watching a Scaly-feathered Finch catch a quick afternoon nap amidst the thorns. These social little birds are true desert survivors! The “scaly” appearance comes from the unique black-and-white feathered pattern on their foreheads and wings, which looks like delicate tiling.

The Black-winged Stilt (Afr: Rooipootelsie) is a master of the shallows. Photographed here in Walvis Bay, Namibia, these waders possess the longest legs in proportion to their body size of any bird species. Their slender, needle-like bills are specialized for precision feeding on aquatic invertebrates in hypersaline and freshwater environments alike.

Sanderlings are well-known for “running with the waves”—dashing out as the tide recedes to grab tiny crustaceans and scurrying back just before the next wave hits.

While they’re famous for their looks, Rosy-faced Lovebirds are actually highly intelligent and resourceful problem-solvers. The females, for example, strip long pieces of bark or leaves and tuck them into their feathers to “transport” materials back to their nests. They can recognise individual faces – both bird and human – and they can figure out puzzle toys and mimic sounds.
Their intelligence is often compared to that of a toddler – curious, persistent, and always looking for a way to “crack the code” of whatever they’re playing with. (These pictures of them were taken in the wild.)

Did you know the White-fronted Plover is a master of temperature control? To protect their eggs from the blistering African sun, these birds will soak their belly feathers in the ocean and then sit on the nest to “air condition” their chicks.

Sir David Attenborough has inspired millions by bringing the natural world and its plight into our homes. He is the inspiration for this wildlife loop. ⁠⠀⁠ ⁠⠀⁠
