What is the best camera?
Canon, Nikon, Sony , Fuji . . . . ?

My answer:

The one that gives you the best return on investment. And I really mean it!

No good you have the latest technology, but you can’t or don’t know how use it.

I see every day clients rent my studio with the latest cameras - but they don’t know how to use it.

TOo many menus, . . . too many options and shooting in studio - the EVs (electronic viewfinders) just don’t do it.

Many times I rush off to my office and bring out my trusty old Nikon D700 (15yrs old), set the Aperture, ISO, shutter speed and manual WB at 5300K for them.

First shot blows their mind and they shoot their full session on my D700.

Today you can pickup a D700/800, or D5 mark ii/iii for less than R10K. Especially for controlled studio work, OCF (off camera flash) and as a cheap backup - they still kick ass and will give a return on investment that can’t be matched.

If I was to start all over, this is how I will build my business. After a lifetime career in this industry - spending too much on equipment. My retirement would be so much better today.

Startups now have such an advantage with regards to equipment. 10yrs old cameras are still so good, cheap and perfect for today.

It was not like that 15-20+ yrs ago.
Skills, experience and confidence trumps equipment and investing in your skills is more valuable than the latest new gadget.

Damn, I’m blown away with the ability of my iPhone!

I even recently shot a full corporate event 80% of my images on my iPhone. The pictures of people are more spontaneous and in the moment than those from my other camera.

Must say I’m very confident with creating pictures with my iPhone and my “client” (my wife’s company) was comfortable with me doing my thing my way.

A skilled, confident photographer with an iPhone will every time outshoot a nervous, lacking confidence and inexperienced tog.

So I believe that the type or brand of camera has got nothing to do with the results.

What does matter is your skill and confidence in the tools you choose to use and your ability to work with people.

GBPStudio info for 2023

Happy New Year !

Last year we celebrated our 10th year of studio rental 🎉

For the past 3 years of Covid, we were happy to keep our rates unchanged hoping it would help us to all get back on our feet.

Unfortunately now with the high increase in diesel cost (for our large backup diesel generator) & extended load shedding, we have no choice to increase our 1Hr & 2Hr studio rates by R200 per session each.

1Hr was R700 => now R900
2Hrs was R1000 => now R1200
3Hrs & more => rates unchanged

All other studio rates (3Hrs, 4Hrs, Half Day and Full Day) will stay unchanged, the same rates as last year.

With the threat of Covid still looming, we remain cautious and have decided to operate with the following requirements in place . . .

- Social Distancing and Sanitation Rules to be observed.

- Maximum limit of 10 persons allowed at our studios.

- Max 5 cars allowed to park.

The following 2023 rates apply:

1) 0-1hr = R900
2) 2hrs = R1200
3) 3hrs = R1500
4) 4hrs = half day = R2000
5) 5hrs = R2400
6) 6hrs = R2800
7) 7hrs = R3200
😎 Full day = R3500 (max 8hrs)
R500 p/hr overtime if you overshoot by 15min or more.

What’s included with your Rental ?

Studio Equipment includes 4x professional Bowens studio Strobes (hanging from the roof & no cables lying on the floor),
2 Octa Boxes (large 1.7m & smaller 1.2m),
2x 70cm Beauty Dishes (white & silver)
2 Striplights
2x New generation RGB LED Light panels
(Will light up the big white wall in any color you choose)
And a few other basic modifiers and the white studio “shooting space” with 5m wide curved white wall.

Free In Studio WiFI - ask for your password.

Rental of the studio space is 100% private, NOT BRANDED and you can actually promote the space as “your very own” resident studio to your clients. We have many professional photographers doing this already.

You will get access to . . .
* a dressing room,
* makeup room,
* open public space
* and a fully furnished kitchen.
* Working space is airconditioned.

NB! ** Load-Shedding ** NB!
The studio is fully backed up with a commercial 3phase diesel generator to guarantee continuation of any size shoot - should there be load-shedding or an unscheduled power interruption.

We also have safe parking for 5 cars under roof.

NB! This includes setup and breakdown time! If the makeup room is to be used for makeup or preparation - then this time must be included in the rental time to be booked.

If a studio booking is canceled, after accepting conditions and confirmation of booking - a cancellation fee is payable equal to:

1. a minimum fee of R350, or
2. 25% of the booking fee (whatever amount is larger)

It is required that the studio be left clean and tidy as originally provided. If not left tidy - a tidying or cleaning fee will be charged.

If excessive scuff marks or damage is left on the white shooting surface, then additional cleaning/ scrubbing, repairs or a repaint might be required. This will be changed at a fee directly related to cost of restoration or repairs.

Covid-19 Lockdown Information, Studio Availability & Rates

We are trying to start up again - got our essential service certificate to operate, but restrictions and requirements during this time is challenging. Including the additional cost of sanitizer equipment, cleaning and screening.

So the studio is now available, but under strict amendments & conditions . . .

During Level-4 of Covid-19 Lockdown:
============================
- Only Media & Entertainment shoots (per regulations) can be conducted.
- Must present in advance all the Correct Documentation, Approved CIPC or Sole Proprietor Essential Services Certificate, Level 4 Staff Permit & Travel Permits for every person on location.
- All Level4 shoots - can only be a Professional Non-Casual / Commercial shoot.
- No families, maternity or private social shoots are allowed (it’s not an essential service, it’s a luxury)
- Commercial rates charged.
- Strict Distancing, Wearing of Masks and Sanitation Rules must be observed at all times.
- Max crew size is 3 people & a client (only small shoots allowed)
- Max 3 cars allowed to park.
NB Note! The above level 4 conditions is included - just in case we get bumped up to level 4 again. Hope not!

Levels-3 & Downwards of Lockdown:
===========================
- Commercial rates will be charged.
- Strict Distancing, Wearing of Masks and Sanitation Rules must be observed at all times.
- Maximum limit of 10 persons allowed at our studios – subject to current lockdown levels.

Protocol to be followed by all clients:
===========================
* As per government regulations all clients using the studio space must provide us with a complete call sheet / attendance register of all crew and clients involved on the shoot. Physical address and contact details to be included.
* Face masks should be worn at all times when on the premises, whilst making use of the studio
* Every person entering the studio will be subject to a temperature scan before entering and will be denied access if they have a temperature reading of 37.3 or higher.
* All clients using our studio and gear must frequently wash or sanitize their hands.
* Social distancing rules of 1 meter will apply when using our studios or when visiting premises.
* As per government instruction, people with underlying health conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart and lung disease) and anyone older than 60yrs of age need to be aware of their increased level of risk.
* Shared spaces like kitchen facilities, bathrooms and dressing rooms, no more than two people allowed in the space at any one time in conjunction to maintaining social distancing whilst utilizing these spaces

Procedures for staff & assistants:
=========================
* Disinfect/Sanitise all working surfaces
* Disinfect/Sanitise all equipment after use
* Wash and sanitise hands regularly
* Cough/sneeze into crook of elbow or tissue (dispose of tissue immediately)
* Avoid physical contact and keep a distance of at least one metre from each other where possible
* Do not share pens, supplies or items before sanitising them
* Do not crowd around water/coffee stations – max two people in the kitchen at a time
* Disinfect all services and appliances after use.
* Display local health and emergency contact details
