“Half-collared Kingfisher”

They can often be spotted enjoying a bath by splashing into the nearby river or lake water, followed by drying and preening their feathers in bright sunlight. They rub their beaks against the branch of a tree and sometimes use their wings to clean the head. This is the secret to their pristine appearance!

Grootlangtoon
- “African Jacana”

“African jacanas are very vocal birds using a selection of raucous shrieks, moans and almost barking noises. In flight they issue a loud and fast staccato ‘kreep – kreep – kreep’, almost like a nasal trilling sound. Alarm calls are, by necessity, extremely loud and consist of sharp single notes similar to ‘kaakup’.”

Gewone Bontrokkie
- “African Stone Chat”

“African Stonechats are usually seen in pairs, and breeding occurs in spring and summer. Females build their nests of grass and softer material in the shape of a deep cup, usually positioned on the ground at the base of a bush or other plant providing good cover. Clutches, containing up to 6 eggs, are incubated only be the female for a period of two weeks, but both parents feed the chicks once they’ve hatched. Chicks leave the nest at about two weeks of age, and then stay with their parents for a further three weeks or so.”

Geeloogkanarie
- “Yellow-fronted Canary”

“The Yellow-fronted Canary birds are seen by themselves or with small groups while foraging. It is not uncommon to see a flock of up to 100 canaries, some even in mixed flocks with other finches. Yellow-fronted canaries are even known to roost together in bushes and trees. During the breeding season, they form pairs that are known to get moderately territorial. However, 2-3 nests are sometimes observed in the same tree.”

Lepelaar
- “African Spoonbill”

“The African spoonbill is a long-legged wading bird that is almost unmistakable through most of its range. During the breeding season, the bird is all white except for its red legs and face and long grey spatulate bill. Immature birds lack the red face and have a yellow bill. Unlike herons, spoonbills fly with their necks outstretched.”

- Koningblousysie
“Violet-eared waxbill”

“The nest is built by both sexes, consisting of a thick-walled, vertical oval-shaped structure made of mainly grass stems, the ends of which stick out untidily. The interior is lined with green grass inflorescences and feathers of other birds. It is typically concealed in the foliage of a shrub or tree. It lays 2-7 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for about 12-13 days.
The chicks are fed and brooded by both adults, leaving the nest after about 16-18 days.”

“Crested Barbet”

“The crested barbet is monogamous and territorial during breeding. Territory size varies according to their habitat. The nest is a hole in a tree or a nesting log placed in a garden. The female lay 1 to 5 eggs in September to December in South Africa.
Incubation lasts between 13-17 days and is mostly done by the female. The young hatch naked and blind and fledge after about 31 days. They are fed insects by both parents. Faecal material is removed regularly. Up to five broods have been recorded in a breeding season.”

“Blue-headed lizard”

“Five fun facts
1. Megawatt mouths – if they weren’t colourful enough, these awesome lizards turn up the brightness factor when they open their distinctive orange mouths.
2. Sticky tips – they secrete mucus from the top of their tongues to make them super sticky and perfect for catching ants and other creepy crawlies.
3. Scales and spines – look past their vivid colours and you will notice that their skin is anything but uniform. The scales along their spine are larger and have small spikes, giving them their raised appearance.
4. Queens of camouflage – females don’t have the vivid blue colouration of the males, instead their brown bodies provide perfect camouflage against their tree trunk homes.
5. Leaping for lunch – they can be aerial acrobats when it comes to catching their dinner, launching themselves into the air in pursuit of moths, flies and beetles.”

- “Civet”

“Civets have an extremely diverse diet which is accommodated by teeth modified for both tearing and crushing. Civets eat plants and fruit, which they gather on the ground or by clambering weakly on low branches. They eat the meat of many kinds of small animals, which they catch with a pounce-bite-shake method. They eat various kinds of poisonous food including insects, puff adders and millipedes..”

“Lesser Masked-weaver”

“Many weaver species are gregarious and breed colonially. The birds build their nests together for protection, often several to a branch. Usually the male birds weave the nests and use them as a form of display to lure prospective females.”

“Half-collared Kingfisher”

While the Half-Collared Kingfisher can be confused with the Malachite Kingfisher the cobalt blue head and and black bill are diagnostic. Their diet mainly includes fish, crabs and aquatic insects. They are monogamous and nest in burrows that they excavate into vertical stream banks. Believe it or not it is said that the chamber of these burrows are lined with fish bones which are used as the nesting material.
