TAKE TEN: Lefa Ditshego 1/3
In a wide-ranging discussion, photographer Lefa Ditshego chats about the importance of being present, the emotional toll that photography can take, and his approach to working with clients. (Photo: )

Hi Lefa, welcome! Can you give us a quick introduction?
Hello! I am a photographer based in Daveyton in the City of Ekurhuleni. I’ve been a photographer for the better part of seven years, and I enjoy what I do. I wanted to be a motoring journalist initially, but things didn’t go according to plan. I have no regrets because photography has been a beautiful part of my life.
I began my photography journey shooting a lot of street photography, but throughout the years, my work has gone into the portrait, nature, events and automotive.

I think documenting the world around us is important. Having a record of the way time has passed and the way our spaces and people evolve are a key part of doing this work. Beyond that, it’s great being an artist.
********

What’s the one skill you learned that drastically improved your photography?
It’s a bit of a peculiar one, but starting to shoot in RAW and being able to process and edit RAW files is probably the one thing that has accounted for the biggest growth in my practice. Fujifilm cameras are famous for the beautiful JPEGs that you get straight out of the camera. This was fine for a long time, but when I started shooting in RAW it unlocked a whole new world for me.

I could do more with the files, such as dialling in the look and feel that I wanted for my photography without compromising image quality. I still had the beautiful colour science that comes standard with these sensors, but with the added flexibility.

Have you tried former ambassador Nathalie Boucry's The Rewinder film recipe yet?

Based on CLASSIC Neg., Nathalie believes this recipe lends itself to almost all everyday scenes when you’re in the mood for a muted, nostalgic look. But, its secret power is transporting your images to a time gone by.
Photographs taken with this recipe have a distinct aesthetic of yesteryear. They show off the unmistakable qualities of grain and muted, contrasty colours that are found in analogue photographs – the key ingredients of memories.
It’s an excellent choice for creating analogue-looking memories straight out of camera.

Follow Nathalie’s The Rewinder film recipe:
FILM SIMULATION: CLASSIC Neg.
MONOCHROMATIC COLOR: N/A
GRAIN EFFECT: WEAK, SMALL
COLOR CHROME EFFECT: STRONG
COLOR CHROME FX BLUE: OFF
SMOOTH SKIN EFFECT: OFF

FUJIFILM cameras are great at reproducing color. Images look superb straight out of the camera thanks to accurate skin tones, big blue skies, and lush green foliage. Our knowledge of color science dates back many decades, drawing on our considerable experience in analog photography.

We have made color and black & white films that are the gold standard in many genres of photography, from landscapes to portraits, and much more. Based on this, we developed FUJIFILM Film Simulation modes, so photographers using X Series and GFX digital cameras can experience the same performance.

Our Film Simulation modes mimic not only the color of some famous analog films, but the tones and contrast, too. You can access them through your camera’s main menu system, but it’s faster through the Quick Menu (just press the Q button), or a dedicated function button (Fn) assigned to Film Simulation modes.

Medium Format Filmmaking Makes WAY More Sense Now!

The new Fujinon Cine Zoom GF lenses look like the perfect pair for the Fujifilm GFX Eterna 55 cinema camera. The 19-35mm T3.5 and 32-90mm T3.5 offer autofocus, servo zoom, optical stabilization and extensive weather sealing at a reasonable price.

But is there a catch? Jordan Drake has been testing these beauties, and he opinions.

Fujifilm ambassador, Kreesan Naidoo, created his Sunday Drives film recipe looking to match the mood of Sundays growing up in Durban. “Rising early, the stillness of the road, and eventually seeing stunning automobiles parked at the car meet to admire in detail – is what I hoped to evoke with this recipe,” he says.

Sunday Drives is meant to isolate drama, and with Eterna Bleach Bypass’ origins from cinema, you’d expect it to do so effectively. With this recipe one can take a step back from the distractions of colour to focus on deeper tones, a rich contrast and evoking emotion from your subject.

Settings for Sunday Drives:
FILM SIMULATION: ETERNA BLEACH BYPASS
MONOCHROMATIC COLOR: N/A
GRAIN EFFECT: N/A
COLOR CHROME EFFECT: WEAK
COLOR CHROME FX BLUE: WEAK
SMOOTH SKIN EFFECT: OFF
WHITE BALANCE: 5600k/ R0, B0
DYNAMIC RANGE: DR200
D RANGE PRIORITY: OFF
TONE CURVE: H -1, S +1
COLOR: +1
SHARPNESS: +1
HIGH ISO NR: 0
CLARITY: 0
