Fahla Fahla! : Occupying The Gallery with the French Institute of South Africa
Fahla Fahla! comes together as an extension of Occupying The Gallery’s residency with IFAS - Institut Français d’Afrique du Sud. This iteration is a collaborative workshop led by visual artist, Hugues Anhēs, and independent exhibition coordinator and curator, Camille Gajate, joining us from Paris, France, through the support of IFAS and Institut français in Paris.
Mary Sibande and Lawrence Lemaoana, are again, joined by seven artists for this venture: Bongani Ndlovu, Hoek Swaratlhe, Lungile Ngcobo, Mlondi Magubane, Mosa Anita Kaiser, Sphatho Mzantsi and Tatenda Magaisa.
Fahla Fahla!, is a colloquialism of the act of putting together, a touch, touch here and there, in bits and pieces. A drop of something short and sweet: adding and subtracting when needed to make a whole.
For the workshop, the artists of Occupying The Gallery are encouraged to work more collaboratively to produce a final artwork that manifests as a mural outside the IFAS building in Braamfontein, and a zine that will act as a tangible remainder of the workshop. The mural and zine production is the first time the artists are working on one visual and textual output together, instead of producing individual works.
This collaborative process is to encourage the artists to familiarise themselves with each other’s individual practices, learn new methods of creating, and to engage in discussion. For most of the artists, it is also an introduction to an art practice that has value outside of profit. With a focus on play, research, exchange, discussion and organic processes.

Join us for the public showcase of the mural and project outcomes!

Time: 12:00 – 14:00

You’re invited to the opening of our first exhibition of the year, ‘Bazobuya... they will coming back’ on Friday, 19 January from 17H30. ‘Bazobuya’ references the musical group, the ‘Soul Brothers’ 1990 song of the same title, echoing the lament of children, mothers, wives of husbands who have left home due to the migrant labour system in South Africa. It is a Zulu phrase which translates to ‘they will coming back’ and is here used as an umbrella to speak to various issues concerning the sociopolitical navigations of black men in South Africa. This body of work was first exhibited by Occupying the Gallery at Gallery 1 in Keyes Art Mile Johannesburg and is now traveling to KZNSA Gallery to new audiences in Durban. ‘Bazobuya... they will coming’ is curated by Lawrence Lemaoana and runs from 19 January to 4 February 2024 at KZNSA Gallery, Durban. The participating artists are: Bongani Ndlovu Hoek Swaratlhe Lusanda Ndita Mlondi Magubane .eye.is.your.eye Ngoma KaMphahle
