On 18 July, South Africans come together to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday by giving 67 minutes of their time in service of others, a tribute to the 67 years Madiba spent incarcerated.
This year, we were grateful to play a small supporting role in permit compliance and logistics for the Mandela Day Langtafel in the Mother City, hosted by The Community Chest of the Western Cape in collaboration with YoungUrbanists, Studio H, and many others.
The project brought together South Africans from all walks of life, cultures, and religions to break bread, share a table, and be reminded of something simple but powerful: we have more in common than we sometimes realise.
A beautiful reminder of connection, community, and the spirit of Mandela Day.

Broadcasts always have a lot of moving parts, but some event days are busier than others. When you’re working with different service providers and the client at the same time, things can get overwhelming very quickly.
That’s where clear communication and knowing your role in the bigger team make all the difference. It helps everyone adapt when last-minute changes come up, and keeps the focus where it should be: making the client look good.

Just past the midweek slump of a 10-day festival, morale can start to feel like something you have to feed with chocolate, quick jokes with slow explanations and reminders to just keep going.
But tonight the enthusiasm we needed, was that of the next generation of young techies that lifts you out of your self-pity.
Tonight we were joined by new young faces, one in the director’s suite and one in the sound booth, and what a game changer it was. Their curiosity, focus, and willingness to jump into the unknown changed the energy in the room.
That kind of enthusiasm is infectious, and we always welcome the interest. So, if you’re new to the industry, interested in learning, or simply have questions, take a chance: stick your head through the “no entry” / “crew only” door and ask that damn question.
Chances are, we’ll pull up a chair for you, answer what we can, and share our chocolates or snacks too.
Welcome to the shadows.

Behind every performance at the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival is a quiet blend of artistry, technology and teamwork.
Hosted at the Endler in the Stellenbosch University Conservatorium, the festival brings students, lecturers, scholars and visiting guests from abroad into one shared musical space. And through the live stream, that music travels far beyond the venue — reaching people across the country and across the world.
There is something beautiful about a festival that unfolds during the varsity holidays. The parking is easier, the campus is quieter, and yet the seats are full. Loyal patrons arrive with weekly passes in hand, while the next generation of patrons-of-the-arts join parents and grandparents for special weeknight outings, often after bedtime.
Of course, the holidays also bring their own backstage challenges. Maintenance schedules, unstable internet, faulty cables, last-minute dongles and forgotten passwords all become part of the story. We bridge the gaps, refresh the stream, laugh at the chaos, and keep going — because somewhere, someone is watching, listening and commenting with excitement from afar.
The audience may never know what happens in the shadows. But we love being there: one moving part, one cog in the wheel, helping the music reach people who could not be in the room.
