Isimpantsula is a style rooted in township culture, emerging from small communities as a form of fashion expression. This style includes bucket hats, All Star sneakers, or shoes with low soles. It is unique, informal, and casual, often associated with a gangster aesthetic. The style moves in rhythm with house music, ukujayiva, and phrases like “ngaqala ngimungaka” reflect its energy and spirit.

This style makes me reflect on my childhood memories and allows me to visualize pieces of art shaped by lived experience. Umlazi is my home, a space where I can create stories that people recognize and relate to, because many of us share similar experiences. Through this work, I explore, create, and preserve these cultural moments for future generations. Isimpantsula is a lokishi culture embraced by South African youth, symbolizing freedom. The dance movements express a powerful statement: I am not chained. This culture remains iconic.
