Where stories lead…

20 years ago, I began my journey as a primary school teacher, teaching IT to learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7. Those six years turned out to be some of the most valuable years of my life. They taught me patience, empathy, and most importantly, how to connect and work with children.

Looking back, I realise those years were also an unexpected training ground for the next chapter of my career in documentary photography and filmmaking. The patience and people skills I developed in the classroom have served me well, particularly when working on stories with organisations such as UNICEF, Sightsavers and Save the Children.

One of the most rewarding things today is occasionally meeting some of the “kids” I taught back then… now grown, building careers, starting families and finding their own paths in life.

Seeing how far they’ve come makes me incredibly proud… and, admittedly, makes me feel a little old! 😁

Every now and then, it’s important to pause and appreciate the people we have had the privilege of sharing the creative journey with.

Today, I want to put the spotlight on my brother and fellow creative, David Ng’ambi of DOD Media Hub.

David and I have had the opportunity to work together on various filming assignments, both here in Zambia and across the African continent. From long days in the field to the unpredictable realities that come with documentary and production work.

What I particularly appreciate about David is his creativity, professionalism, adaptability and commitment to the work. He is one of those creatives who understands that what we do goes beyond simply operating a camera or producing content. We are telling stories, documenting realities and shaping narratives.

The creative industry needs more people who are willing to collaborate, share knowledge, raise the standard and create opportunities for others. David is certainly one of those people.

I have personally enjoyed the journey of working alongside him, and I’m proud to call him a colleague, collaborator and friend.

Keep creating, David. The industry is better because of creatives like you. 👊🏾

For almost 2 decades, I’ve worked as a visual storyteller using still and motion pictures. Years into the work, the thing I keep coming back to isn’t just the stories I’ve captured and told, but It’s the people standing next to me when they were made.

This is a small collection of some of them: fixers, translators, drivers, community health workers, teachers, farmers, teams from various organisations and many more. People who let me into their day, vouched for me in communities I’d never have found my own way into, taught me the right questions to ask and, more often, when not to ask anything at all.

Filmmaking and photography get talked about as solitary work. It rarely is. Every frame I’ve kept over the years has someone just out of shot who made it possible, carried gear across a riverbed, translated a joke that landed better than my English ever could, told me to come back tomorrow because today wasn’t the day.

I don’t take for granted that this is the career I get to have. Travelling the world, being trusted with people’s stories, learning six languages’ worth of ways to say thank you — it’s a strange and enormous privilege and it hasn’t worn thin.

To everyone in these photos, and the many more who aren’t pictured but should be: thank you for the work, the patience, the company and the fun! I’m truly grateful to y’all 🙏🏽

After years of knowing about her work, I finally had the opportunity to meet Dr. Kerstin Hacker following a panel discussion during the inaugural Bakashimika International Photography Festival in Lusaka.

As photographers, we often speak about the power of images to tell stories. Dr. Kerstin has gone a step further by helping create spaces where Zambian photographers can tell their own stories, on their own terms. Through Bakashimika, she has played a significant role in connecting local creatives with international opportunities, encouraging collaboration, nurturing emerging talent and helping position Zambia on the global photography map.

The creative industry grows when people invest not only in their own work, but in others. Dr. Kerstin’s commitment to supporting photographers and visual storytellers in Zambia is making a lasting impact, and it’s inspiring to see.

Thank you for your dedication to building a stronger creative community. Here’s to many more conversations, collaborations and stories yet to be told!
