“When living in Zimbabwe you have to export your skills elsewhere. We received this commission in 2009. This was the first time a river lodge had been built in Ghana at Akasombo on the West Bank of the Volta River. Forty four containers of gum poles and thatch were shipped from Durban to Tema. A team of thatchers from Bulawayo taught locals the art of thatching which had been lost when ‘Emu’ brand corrugated iron arrived from Birmingham 100 years earlier. It was completely new concept in Ghana and our team included Zimbabwean interior designer Colleen Myburgh who tragically passed away a few years ago from cancer. The completed development was awarded Ghana’s Eastern Region best hotel in 2017. In 2019 it was included in the top 10 hotels in West Africa. Yesterday it received the award for the Best Luxury Architecture Design for the whole of Africa.”

Just last evening our fellow Diaspora citizens of Zimbabwe residence in the UK were addressed by H.E the President.
Reengagement and Engagement was the main topic of the day. H.E and his team utilized the rare opportunity at the just ended COP26 to interact with Heads of States and Governments of countries that imposed unilateral economic sanctions on us(Zimbabwe) . The following are some major points to take home.
1. H.E the President began by thanking the Rt Hon PM of Britain for extending an invitation to Zimbabwe to attend the just ended successful global summit on climate change(COP26).
1a. H.E interacted with Potus(JoeBiden) and the Zidera issue was raised. Biden subsequently instructed his staffer to take note and raise the issue for discussion when they get back to Capitol Hill.
2. H.E talked to the Rt Hon PM of Canada. H.E cordially invited the Rt Hon PM of Canada to visit Harare. The Rt Hon accepted the invitation. He however suggested that it could sound better if his Foreign Minister visit Zimbabwe first before him. Canada is more than ready to reconsider its position on Zimbabwe.
3. H.E met the SG of the Commonwealth bloc and discussed the issue of Zimbabwe rejoining the bloc. The SG underscored that there were still some technical aspects being worked on before Zimbabwe’s application to rejoin could be fully considered. The timeframe is short.
4. H.E met Prince Charles and discussed various issues guided by the theme Reengagement. Prince Charles indicated that he would love to visit Zimbabwe in the shortest period of time. H.E reminded His Royal Highness the Prince that his last visit to Zimbabwe was 41 years ago at the occasion of lowering the Union Jack 🇬🇧 and hoisting of the new Zimbabwean flag 🇿🇼.
5. H.E also met the first minister of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Various issues were discussed including bilateral relations, investment issues etc. Interestingly on that day our Foreign Minister Ambassador Dr F Shava opened a new diplomatic house in Glasgow Scotland.
In conclusion, H.E on the sidelines of COP26 met and discussed important issues with Authorities of the Vatican City.
What a successful foreign trip in the spirit of Reengagement and Engagement.
