August 12th is World Elephant Day. And the giants of the savannah are so beautiful! How can anyone kill for the ivory on their tusks? They are also threatened by deforestation takes over their natural habitat. It makes me so sad and angry!

The 1st photo was taken at the Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary in Nairobi Kenya. Elephants are brought here when they are orphaned in the wild due to many of the above factors. Majority are hand reared and able to be re-introduced to the wild. The 2nd photo could not scream out safari more if it tried!

August 10th is World Lion Day. No matter how many times I have seen the King of the Jungle or the ladies who have to do all the work, I am in awe. Let’s do everything we can to ensure they are wondering the plains for generations to come- conservation!

The male in this photo was taken about 1 kilometer before the gates to Moremi National Park Botswana, we came across two male lions taking shade under a tree. I guess they didn't know how to read the signs that the park was still a kilometer away- but look at those eyes.

The lioness is sitting on a patch of dirt out in the open in the middle of the day. In the Maasai Mara, Kenya this is a rare sighting as they often are seeking shade. But when you come across one and get to watch every subtle turn of the head, capture all angles.

August 8th is Happiness Happens Day- something I firmly believe in. What is this day you ask?
“There are so many different ways that you can celebrate Happiness Happens Day! It is all about being happy, and doing what makes you and others feel this way. This day encourages people to take stock of their lives and to do things and think about things that make them happy, so this is what you should aim to do on this day.”

August 5th is Blogger Day As some of you may know, I have been writing a blog about my travels for year called the World According to Garf. But with the start of my website, I have been writing shorter entries about bigger ideas- like this entry about to Edit or Not to Edit your photos:

Not all photos capture the scenery perfectly. And to tell the truth, no photograph does the actual experience justice. But how much should we alter the final product? I go with the "a little goes a long way" theory.

For example, I tend to miss the straight horizon all the time- that to me isn't even an edit- that is just a reset your eye to your mind. The same with cropping an image to either zoom more on detail or leave off the edge you didn't really mean to include.

As for color, tones, shadows and, if I was talking about my own self image- "botox". That's really the little goes a long way. The camera never truly captures the color of a sunset- so if you can get it to mirror closer to what was "IRL"- go for it.

Photoshop is an art in itself. While no photographer likes to hear someone say "wow you must have a really good camera" when really it is the photographer and their knowledge. I do believe you can be told you are really good at photoshopping- aka- a little white lie.

July 29th is Rain Day. All life is dependent on rain, and rain is what keeps our world green and fresh and beautiful. Rain is no less important today than it has been in the past, and now people around the world have Rain Day, a day to celebrate all things wet and wonderful.

I learned this throughout my days in Africa- especially since Cape Town was going through a drought. I will never forget the first “good rain” (yes that is what they called it) and the dancing in the streets. This photo was taken in Zimbabwe- where you can see the amazing storm clouds rolling in. And yes, you will at some point sing “I bless the rains down in Africa”

July 26th is "All or Nothing Day"- I don't make this up- just report what is online.

What exactly is this day about? "National All or Nothing Day allows people to throw caution to the wind and go for broke. We all have dreams we hold back, decisions left to make, or plans uncompleted. On this day, people break free of everything holding them back. Everyone has at least one thing that they would like to overcome, need to do or want to do but might be fearful or hesitant to do so. This is the day to go ahead and do it, take that first step and go for it"

Ironically it also 3 years ago yesterday since I shared the news with the industry that I was heading to Africa. (I didn't choose the day but love the coincidence now)!

June 13th- ROCK DAY. And I’m not talking about music but about the amazing natural wonders around the world. One of the grandest in the world is Uluru- formerly known as Ayers Rock. The views at sunrise AND sunset are awe inspiring.

July is official "Picnic Month"- and if there was ever a year to picnic, 2020 would be it!
