Before you ask to recreate that photo, ask what you love about it.

Maybe it’s the soft light. Maybe it’s how close the couple feels. Maybe it’s the space around them, or the sense that nobody is trying too hard.

Those details tell us much more about your taste than a pose alone.

Try choosing three references and writing one sentence about each: “I like this because…” Bring those thoughts into your photography conversation.

We didn't get into this job to take pretty pictures of two people standing in nice light. We got into it because of what happens around them.

The way your mom fixes your veil without being asked. The way your college roommates lose it laughing at your speech. The way your grandfather claps a little slower than everyone else but claps the longest.

Nobody puts those moments on a shot list. We just make sure we're always looking for them, because years from now, that's what you'll actually go back and look at.

Before you fall in love with the golden-hour photo, look at the dimmer ones.

The portraits may happen in beautiful light. Your speeches might happen in a dim room, followed by a dance floor full of moving people.

When you’re comparing photographers, spend time with that part of the gallery too. Look for expressions, atmosphere and the people you’d want to remember.

For us, those photographs belong in the conversation just as much as the portraits.
