Barrie Police are investigating after human skeletal remains were discovered near Anne Street South and Tiffin Street on Thursday, August 13.

Police were contacted at approximately 12:30 p.m. after the remains were found in the area. Officers attended the scene and confirmed that the remains were human.

The remains will be submitted to the Centre of Forensic Sciences as investigators work to determine the identity of the deceased.

The OPP Urban Containment Rescue Team will assist police with a search of the nearby water for additional evidence. Barrie Police will maintain control of the scene until the search is complete.

The discovery was made near the site of a double homicide that occurred last summer at a former encampment. However, police are treating the discovery as a separate investigation at this time.

Investigators say it is too early to determine the circumstances surrounding the remains or make assumptions about their connection to any other case. If detectives uncover a link to another investigation, police say further information will be released when appropriate.

The Barrie Police Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.

Help bring Autumn Shaganash home

Today marks three years since 26-year-old Autumn Shaganash was last seen, and as each day without answers rolls into the next, the determination of those working the case mounts.

On June 10, 2023, Autumn disappeared, seemingly without a trace. Since that day, her family and friends have had to endure the past three years without knowing what happened, where she is, or whether she’s okay. That uncertainty is a pain no family should have to endure.

On the three-year anniversary, Barrie Police are appealing once again for information and asking the public to take another look at the case.

Autumn was last seen in the area of Sunnidale Park, close to the Sunnidale Road and Letitia Street intersection, between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. She was on her way to the Barrie Air Show at the waterfront with a male friend who was walking just ahead of her, and when he turned around, she was gone. Autumn vanished the same day dozens of people were in attendance for an ALS walk at the park. Police are confident someone who has yet to come forward had to have seen something.

Despite extensive investigative efforts and searches conducted over the past three years, investigators have been unable to determine what happened to her.

“Three years is an unimaginable amount of time for a family to wait for answers. We never stopped investigating this case, just as the Shaganash family has never stopped holding onto hope. The passage of time does not diminish the importance of this investigation. We believe there are people who know something and we are asking them to come forward. The smallest detail could make all the difference.” – Major Crime Unit Sgt. Brett Carleton

In December 2025, the reward authorized by the Barrie Police Service Board for information leading to answers in Autumn’s disappearance was increased to up to $100,000.

Once again, a digital billboard campaign featuring Autumn launched this week and will run throughout the month of June to help raise awareness. The campaign, made possible through the generous support of Pattison Outdoor Advertising, can be seen at various locations across the city.

The renewed awareness effort serves as a reminder that Autumn is not forgotten, and investigators remain determined to solve this case and bring her family those long-awaited answers.

Anyone with information regarding the disappearance or whereabouts of Autumn Shaganash is urged to contact Barrie Police at 705-725-7025 ext. 2160. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

Someone knows what happened to Autumn. Three years later, Barrie Police are still waiting for that person to do the right thing and come forward.
