Rest in Peace Sir Sam Neill 🖤 🕯️
The world has lost one of its most beloved actors. Sir Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand screen legend whose remarkable career spanned more than five decades, has sadly passed away at the age of 78.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Sam moved to New Zealand as a child, where he discovered a passion for acting that led to an extraordinary international career. His breakthrough came in Sleeping Dogs (1977), followed by the acclaimed My Brilliant Career (1979), which launched him onto the world stage.
He became a global icon as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park (1993), later returning in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Dominion. His extraordinary career also included The Piano, Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, The Tudors, and Peaky Blinders.
Disney fans knew him as Colonel Geoffrey Brydon in Disney's The Jungle Book (1994), while Marvel fans loved his cameo as the Asgardian actor playing Odin in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. He was knighted as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2022 for his outstanding contributions to the arts.
Sam passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on July 13, 2026, in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his family. His loved ones shared that one blessing was that he remained completely cancer-free, following successful treatment for lymphoma earlier this year, and thanked the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their compassionate care.
Away from acting, Sam loved his Two Paddocks vineyard, where he famously named his animals after friends and co-stars, including a chicken called Laura Dern, a duck named Kylie Minogue, and a cow named Helena Bonham Carter.
Sir Sam is survived by his four children and six grandchildren.
