Here are the dates that we're aiming to go back to Masai Mara and Amboseli in 2027.

This is to coincide with the high density of animals in these areas before the last crossing into Tanzania, and also to try to find some of the famous Super Tuskers in Amboseli. We visit some areas that people often don't go to. Let me know ASAP if you're interested. We only need 4 people to get these rates, and how soon we get booked is also a factor. We are also happy to organise trips to Samburu, Lake Nakuru, Tsavo East & West, just let us know asap. For more info, see link in comments or images in post.

July: 11th - 21st (Inclusive) Return to Nairobi Airport on 22nd

This is Poppy.

Poppy, an iconic female elephant and her offspring along with a family of elephants on a beautiful morning in January with the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kiliminjaro, were making their journey from the forest at the base of Kilimanjaro, to the swamp at Amboseli. We had the privilege of photographing them on this journey.

Poppy, one of the oldest females, with her adorable calf, which was only born last year in 2025.

Their story is a story that is bitter sweet. In the last few days, Poppy sadly passed away of natural causes aged 53 years.

For an elephant to pass of natural causes is a blessing, when so many succumb to death so cruelly, especially when they carry such iconic tusks.

Poppy’s female calf still so young, cannot survive in the wild without her mother. The calf was rescued by the Kenya Wildlife Service and taken to Sheldrick Wildlife Trust orphanage. The calf has been named “Poppy”….after her mother.

Baby Poppy is apparently doing well with the other orphan elephants and older females in the group who are taking good care of her. We were looking forward to seeing Poppy again when we return in January, but this makes us realise how lucky we were to meet her even once.

Rest easy Mother Poppy...

“We kept quiet taking pictures, and about 10 minutes later they got used to us and walked out into the road ahead of us while the sun was still above the mountains, so we were extremely lucky.” 🦒✨

Sometimes the best wildlife moments come to those who wait.

Northern Carmine Bee-eaters, Tsavo East, Kenya.

Early on a morning drive, we came across some of these gorgeous birds flying over some open grassland. It was fantastic to sit watching them for a while as they darted about catching blister beetles and other insects. We noticed that once an individual flew off from its perch, it often came back to the same place, or very nearby, with its quarry. As it was early, and also a showery morning, the light was low and soft - perfect for dreamy savannah backgrounds, and I always love to include habitat, and a sense of scale where possible. I love how these birds just look so tiny when set against the Savannah, even though they are a decent sized bird, maybe like a thrush. It was also quite dim and variable, however, making it challenging to shoot fast moving subjects at times.

I've been fascinated with birds since I was a young Child, a fascination I acquired from my Dad, who is bird-obsessed. Even though to this day, my favourite bird is the good old European Goldfinch, I've always been mesmerised by the sheer breadth of the colour palette on display among some of the the more "exotic" birds, especially, the very "balanced" complimentary colours of some of the bee-eaters. I've shot these birds before, on my first trip to Kenya, but I have no idea where most of my original slides from back then are, so I was eager to capture them again with my digital gear. There are a few individuals here, in a range of plumage "conditions", and displaying a variety of hue variations from pink to bright red, but all stunning, unique individuals in my book, so I was glad to capture them.

I know everyone thinks of lions & the "big 5", when you mention Kenya, but it is an amazing location to photograph birds. Especially in January. Not only do you have the Northern Carmine Bee-eater, which is resident across all of northern tropical Africa, but there are many other exotic winter visitors at this time as well. I will probably post some of those at some point too, but in the meantime, I hope you like these.

Meet the family!
On our first evening in Samburu National Reserve, we came across a baboon troop making their way across the track, heading towards the river. We took some pictures then, but made a note to follow them down to the river before sunset after we explored a bit and scouted out a few spots to find elephants the next morning. When we eventually went down to the river, we were glad to see that they were still there. Olive Baboons are a common sight near lodges and close to some villages in Kenya as they scavenge for food, so people often ignore them when they encounter them in the bush. Seeing them in these two contexts couldn't be more polar opposites in terms of a wildlife viewing experience. In the bush they are far more timid and wary of human proximity, especially when they have young. Watching primates in the wild is one of my favourite things to do. Here we hung back to give them plenty of space so they could just be themselves, and we could just watch. Seeing them interact with their close family members and extended family members is mesmerising! Children playing with a found object, and chasing each other for a closer look while the parents stayed aware of what they were getting up to. What I find most enlightening about watching them is how they switch from these external relationships back to these more thoughtful, apparently introspective moments, where they're clearly thinking away to themselves, sometimes alone, and sometimes in pairs or groups. Watching a mother just sit cradling her toddler while they both just watch the sunset for what seemed like ages makes it impossible to not see ourselves in them. Apart from the obvious complex social structures and relationships, they clearly live deep, detailed and complex internal lives. What was also obvious, was that they came down to the river bank to do nothing else but to enjoy themselves and to relax. All possibly except for one individual - the big troop leader, the alpha male, who though relaxed, spent the entire time keeping an eye out for any signs of trouble. Just like a human grandparent on a family day out. After a while I forgot they weren't us! This was their "day at the beach"!
I hope you enjoy these!
