Summertime is family time☀️

I only do a handful of extended family sessions each year, and it’s always so fun! More kids = more chaos but I love to see all the cutie little cousins playing together🥹

Things are getting busier around here, and I’m currently booking August and September dates. If you’re an autumn family photo kind of family, it’s time to start planning your session before dates start filling up💕

I keep telling myself I’m going to get back into creating more content, and then I don’t😅 Social media is not my strong suit but I’m loving my summer sessions so far☀️

Also, this momma had such a beautiful vision for this in-home motherhood session! Such a beautiful way to commemorate her birthday and the relationship she shares with her growing kiddos💕

That ✨light and joy✨ feeling💗

I launched my photography business during a season of life that was characterized more by darkness than light, and in some ways, serving my fist clients was one way that I was proving to myself that there was goodness and love and joy in the world. I always loved art and loved the idea of being able to preserve moments for my clients to remember moments saturated with love.

It’s kind of crazy how much has changed in just a handful of years, how much I’ve learned and grown both as an artist and as an entrepreneur. One thing that remains the same, though, is how much I love capturing moments of light and love. There is so much symbolism in light, and incorporating my deep understanding from all the trial and error to work as a co-creator with the all-encompassing warmth of the sun, and the authentic love and joy exhibited by my clients is such a sacred work to me. Work is picking back up for me now that we’re approaching summer, and I’m so excited to create and capture more beautiful moments with my clients💗

I could fill pages and pages with all the thoughts I’ve had as I think about Mother’s Day this year: my 4+ years as a single mom are coming to a close, and I’ve thought about lessons I’ve learned about life and motherhood during those years, and I’ve thought about how isolating it can be to be a parent with no one to turn to in the moments when you need it most, and about the people who have filled in the gaps in ways no one ever imagined. I’ve thought about how Mother’s Day can be a painful reminder of things you wish were, but aren’t, and about loved ones who hold grief and loss on this day rather than their little ones. I’ve thought about how, as the “magic maker” of the family, Mother’s Day has only been made special for me by the labor of the women around me—daycare providers and ladies at church and the girls who are my friends—and how I want to give back and help the people in my life feel loved and appreciated, too, and how every mom I know spends this day celebrating the ones who made them mothers. The sacred responsibility of parenthood is such an incredible gift, and although I have nothing profound to say that’s never been said, I am so grateful for the beautiful, beautiful moments I get to capture.

I see the freckles on my daughter’s face and am filled with love. I hear her cry when she scrapes her shoulder and I run to her as though I can fix it. I feel her tiny lips brush my cheeks with the exaggerated sounds and I am complete. The love we learn is so deep and poignant, there are no words to fully describe it, but I am grateful for all the challenges and miracles and moments and mysteries that make motherhood so beautiful.

Happy Mother’s Day🩷

I get it—planning a photography session can feel like a lot, especially if you’re detail-oriented like me🙈 Wheb planning my own family photos, I follow the same guidelines I do with my clients:

🌸 Vision: do you prefer traditional portraits, or do you also value candid moments and interactions? Are there specific things you want in a location—trees, flowers, more of an urban vibe? What is most important to get out of a photography session for you? For me, I wanted family/engagement photos that captured emotion and this season our lives that could live on my walls💕

🌸 Loction: based on the season on my aesthetic, I chose a blooming apple orchard for our location

🌸 Outfits: I recommend starting with mom’s outfit, and building off of that. I found a dress that I LOVE and chose my daughter’s dress based on that, and had my fiancé wear something that matched our color scheme and degree of formality

🌸 On the day of, I brought our outfits to change into so they wouldn’t wrinkle during the long drive, and made sure my little one was fed and rested so she would be as happy as possible. Did our hair and my makeup, and we were ready to go💕 I made sure my nails were done and that I had some fresh flowers I had wanted on hand as well.

I walk through these steps with all of my clients, and am so glad I have a system so I could keep our experience as stress free as possible! Save this reel to have a game plan for your next family photos🩷
