Mark True Photo

Mark True Photo I’m a fine art photographer using a digital camera to capture commmon things in common places, but in unexpected ways.

My work invites viewers to linger awhile, taking time to tap into their memory
or imagination, to find an answer, or complete the story Rural landscapes, small towns, and the people who live there are the heart of my photography. Trained as a journalist and writer, I use the camera to tell stories that begin with an implied “Once upon a time…”

Whether capturing a wide stretch of farmland, a wea

thered face, or an intimate architectural detail, my goal is to reveal both the familiar and the unexpected. Working in color and black and white, I favor simple, graphic compositions that isolate subjects or draw viewers inward. Each image reflects a place’s past, present, and future while inviting reflection on the enduring character of that space.

While I was in Clear Lake on Friday and Saturday, I got to see about 50 10- to 12-year-olds hop in tiny dinghies and head out to the middle of Clear Lake to race each other. The sight of all those sails was cool to capture, but I was most impressed by the skill, fearlessness, and competitiveness of those young people, captured in this one sailor.

And there wasn't a screen in sight!

I just assembled a new set of Small Art Collections for upcoming shows in Clear Lake (July 25) and Lake Okoboji (August 1).

Each collection includes five 5”x5” prints, a sticker, a business card (which also includes an image), and a quote about seeing differently.

It’s a great way to dip your toe into the water of my work and become an instant collector!

I got to flex my street photography muscles this weekend, photographing the Des Moines Arts Festival alongside several talented photographers, including Alan Jacobs. It was Alan who reminded me to slow down and look for interesting relationships. Linda Lewis' sculptures are fascinating to look at, but they create even more interesting stories in this context.

I finally buttoned up my 2026 schedule of art fairs, and even though I thought I'd cut back a bit in 2026, I still ended up with eight opportunities to talk with art lovers about my work and help them decide what will look great in their homes or offices.

Check out the schedule below to see when we can get together this summer or fall! Next up? Iowa City this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 5, 6, & 7!

I’m assembling new “zines”, debuting in Iowa City this weekend. These tiny handmade publications let people see my work for just $5 (each zone includes a sticker)!

I also have my small art collection which includes five 5”x”5 prints and a sticker for $25. Buyers can’t see what’s in their surprise pack until they purchase, which makes it even more fun.
