This tricolored heron was hunting in the surf at sunrise.

The light wasn't ideal and my autofocus kept grabbing the bright water behind the bird instead of the subject. Shot after shot missed.

I almost moved on.

Instead, I kept adjusting my position, waiting for a better angle and better light.

Eventually everything lined up—the heron, the fish, the light, and the camera.

A good reminder that persistence often looks pretty boring right up until the moment it pays off.

I was walking the causeway toward Howard Beach with my camera in hand, but my mind was somewhere else.

Then I heard a splash.
Right in front of me, perfectly lit by the morning sun, an osprey pulled a fish from the water.

I wasn’t ready. I missed the shot.

Wildlife photography has a way of reminding you:
the moment doesn’t wait for you to catch up.

Be present… or you might miss something extraordinary.
