Tomorrow the car points north. 🌪️

Late June in the Northern Plains is one of my favorite places on Earth. Endless skies, slow-moving supercells, and some of the most beautiful storms you’ll ever see.

The last June when I made this trip, I witnessed what may be the most photogenic tornado I’ve ever photographed near Gary, South Dakota.

Time to see what Lady June has planned this year.

You never forget your first.

Today marks 17 years since I saw my first tornado near Yates City, Illinois.

I had no idea at the time that this EF-2 tornado would spark a passion that would shape much of my life.

More than 250 tornadoes later, the feeling is still the same every time I see one.

Looking back, it’s amazing how one moment on a country road can change the course of your life forever.

If I’m feeling wild, I’ll post the video later but it’s pretty embarrassing!

The pattern over the Plains is about to get interesting. 🌩️

We’re heading into a stretch where thunderstorms could develop somewhere across the region almost every day.

At first glance, none of these days look like major outbreak setups. But June has a habit of surprising us when moisture, instability, and leftover boundaries start interacting.

Some of the most memorable severe weather events happen on days that don’t look particularly impressive several days in advance.

Today’s focus will be across parts of the northern Plains, but I’m also keeping an eye on a sneaky setup(MCV) in Kansas that could produce a few surprises.

Some chase days end with a sunset supercell.
Some end with a rattlesnake.

Every once in a while, you get both.

Prairie rattlesnake beneath a sunset LP supercell near McCook, Nebraska. Both of my passion's colliding.

Tornado Watch is now in effect across parts of the Northern Plains. 🌪️

Wish I could be out there today, but I’ve got a few more days to wait.

June is finally here, and if the pattern cooperates, the next couple of weeks could be very active across the Plains.

June is a storm photographer’s dream. 📸🌩️

The frantic pace of May begins to fade.

Storms slow down.
Structure takes over.
The sunsets get longer.
And the Great Plains become home to some of the most beautiful skies on Earth.

Next week I’ll be hitting the road for two straight weeks in search of moments like this.

Captured June 7, 2025 near Nara Visa, New Mexico.

If June has anything like this in store, I can’t wait to see what’s over the next horizon.

Last night on a backroad near Braman, Oklahoma, we came over a large hill surrounded by trees that dropped down toward a rushing creek across the road.

When we stopped, we were surrounded by what felt like a million fireflies.

I’ve never seen that many at once, so I started taking photos… and I couldn’t believe the result.

A true firefly outbreak.

Lightning. Fireflies. Stars.

All in the same frame. ⚡️ ✨

The spiked lightning from the side of the updraft happened multiple times and I can’t remember many times capturing bolts like those.

Captured south of Braman, Oklahoma last night (5-31-26).
