If I could tell every parent one thing before a session, it would be this:

You do not need to spend the entire car ride coaching your child.

You don’t need to practice smiles.

You don’t need to threaten them with the loss of tablet privileges.

And you definitely don’t need to apologize to me when they start acting like a kid.

I know it’s coming.

The wiggles.
The random noises.
The sudden urge to lay on the floor.
The complete inability to answer a question they’ve known the answer to for five straight years.

That’s not a problem.

That’s childhood.

The best photos rarely happen when a child is trying their hardest to be perfect.

They happen in the little moments between directions.

When they’re relaxed.
When they’re being themselves.
When they’ve forgotten there’s even a camera in the room.

So if you’ve ever avoided family photos because you were worried your child wouldn’t cooperate…

I promise you’re probably describing every child I’ve ever photographed.
