There's something about Lake Michigan that never gets old.

Most of you know me from the motocross tracks, sporting events, and all the action I photograph throughout the year.

But there's another side to my photography that doesn't involve engines, flying dirt, or someone trying to defy gravity on two wheels.

Sometimes, it's about slowing down.

Standing along the shores of Lake Michigan watching a storm roll in. Catching a whitetail buck looking straight into the camera. Watching the last bit of sunlight disappear over the horizon.

Those are the moments that remind me why I picked up a camera in the first place.

Before there was a challenge, there was a dog. And before there was a movement, there was one man willing to walk 20 miles.

Every great organization has an origin story. Some start with a business plan, some with a big idea.

The Ruff Ruck Challenge started with a dog that needed help.

Tony Laskowicz learned that one of his employees had a service dog in desperate need of life-saving surgery. The problem was finding a way to pay for it.

So Tony did something pretty simple.

He laced up his boots, strapped on a ruck, fired up Facebook Live, and started walking.

20 miles

He kept walking until the money was raised.

The community showed up. The money came together. And the dog got the surgery it needed.

But something else happened along the way.

An idea was born.

If a community could come together to help one dog, imagine what it could accomplish by coming together for a bigger purpose.

That single act of kindness eventually became the Ruff Ruck Challenge, an annual event in Muskegon dedicated to supporting service dog programs for veterans and first responders.

And that little green-and-yellow ball in the second photograph?

That's the ball that started it all.

A small piece of history that represents something much bigger than itself.

As an Army veteran, a lifelong dog lover, and someone who understands just how much these four-legged companions can mean to people, this story hits a little differently.

Sometimes the biggest movements don't start with money, sponsors, or grand plans.

Sometimes they start with one person who sees someone struggling and decides to do something about it.

One dog. One man. One 20-mile walk.

And a community that continues to carry that mission forward.

That's what The Ruff Ruck Challenge is all about.

Yesterday was our favorite event of the year!

Veterans and doggos. 🇺🇸🐾

I mean, seriously. You put those two things together, and I'm pretty much guaranteed to show up. Throw in some amazing people and a great cause, and you've got yourself one hell of an event.

Every year, I sit down afterward and try to figure out how to explain just how awesome this event is.

And every year, my brain apparently decides words are optional. 😂

There's just SO MUCH good happening!

Money being raised. Service dogs being trained to help veterans. Humane Society doggos getting some love. People volunteering their time, opening their wallets, and showing up for something bigger than themselves.

And that's barely scratching the surface.

Being a veteran myself, and knowing firsthand how much a dog can mean to someone, this one hits a little closer to home.

It's more than a fundraiser. It's a community of people making a real difference in the lives of veterans and dogs.

To everyone who puts this together and everyone who supports it, THANK YOU!

You folks are doing some incredible things, and we're proud to be a small part of it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got about a million dog photos to go through.

Veterans and doggos. Still undefeated as the greatest combination on the planet. 🇺🇸🐾

This is who I'm donating to this year. Now that I'm back into running, every mile I run/walk, a $1 dollar of my own money is going to them. Plus an Army buddy is putting $1 dollar in for every mile he runs. So far were up to over $600 so far. I'm trying to raise $5000 for WMK9 Foundation by the end of the year. Yesterday we knocked out 10 miles. Every mile ran and walked this year by us will be $1 going to charity for veterans. Gotta give the page a follow. Lots of updates coming soon!

This morning's assignment was a 10-mile Zone 2 long run.

Nobody is handing out medals for getting up before sunrise.

Nobody is forcing us to lace up our shoes. We do it because discipline doesn't take weekends off.

Every mile we run is another dollar donated to a veteran charity.

It's a simple mission: stay moving, stay accountable, and give back to the men and women who served our country.

10 miles down. $20 earned for veterans.

Run with purpose. Honor through action.
