Capturing food in motion adds a whole different dimension to the shot. Getting that perfect pasta twirl suspended in mid-air takes coordination - timing the lift, freezing the movement with the right shutter speed, making sure the focus hits exactly where you need it. The human element here brings life to what could be a static plate of spaghetti. Those hands holding the forks, the subtle blur of the background figure - it tells a story about the experience of eating, not just the food itself. Food photography works best when it feels like a moment you’d actually want to be part of. ⁠

The cheese melting on the side of a grilled cheese is one of those money shots in food photography - but getting it right means working fast before everything cools down. That golden-brown crust, the glistening melted cheese stretching between the halves, the crispy bacon catching the light - these are the textural details that make people hungry. Food photography is all about timing. You’ve got maybe ten minutes from when the dish is plated until it starts losing its appeal. The lighting has to highlight that crispiness on the bread while showing off the gooey cheese without making it look greasy. When it all comes together, you get an image that makes you want to take a bite. ⁠

Lyre’s non-alcoholic spirits have been pushing boundaries in the beverage industry, and I wanted to create imagery that matched their bold approach. That AI-generated background creates this tunnel effect that pulls your eye straight to the bottle while those warm red tones amplify the richness of the liquid. The ornate crystal glassware adds layers of texture and reflection that give depth to the composition. Working with non-alcoholic spirits presents the same creative challenges as traditional spirits - you’re still selling flavor, complexity, and experience through visual storytelling. ⁠

Food photography presents different challenges than beverages - you’re working with multiple elements that need to feel cohesive while each dish maintains its own appeal. This overhead composition lets each plate tell its story while creating that inviting, communal dining feel. The warm wood tones and natural styling keep everything grounded and approachable. Getting the lighting right across multiple textures - from fresh greens to glossy sauces to pasta - requires balancing highlights and shadows so nothing gets lost. These are the kinds of shots where every element needs to pull its weight in the frame. ⁠

Grimm’s Cocktail Codex ep10. The Last Word. This Prohibition-era cocktail deserves more attention. Equal parts gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and fresh lime juice. That vibrant green from the Chartreuse creates one of the most visually striking drinks in the classic cocktail canon. The herbal complexity of Chartreuse combined with the botanical gin and bright lime creates something that’s both powerful and perfectly balanced. Sometimes the most interesting cocktails are the ones that got lost in time and deserve to be rediscovered. ⁠

Perfectly cooked skirt steak with that bright chimichurri is one of those combinations that never gets old. The challenge with photographing meat is capturing the texture - those individual muscle fibers, the caramelized crust from proper searing, the gradient from charred exterior to that perfect medium-rare center. Lighting becomes critical here. You need angles that emphasize the surface texture without making it look dry, highlighting the moisture and juiciness while showing off that char.
