One of the biggest concerns I hear from people before a photography session is:

“I don’t know how to pose.”

Good.

You don’t need to. 😄

That’s my responsibility.

Small changes in posture, expression, shoulders, hands, and body language can make the same person appear approachable, confident, authoritative, or uncomfortable.

So when I’m directing someone, I’m not simply trying to find a pose that “looks good.”

I’m thinking about what that pose communicates.

If you’re an executive, business owner, leader, or professional, your photographs should be intentional about that message.

Your professional image might be telling an old story.

I see this with professionals who have grown significantly in their careers but are still using a headshot from an earlier season.

You may be leading people now.

You may own the company.

You may be speaking, consulting, meeting clients, or representing your organization publicly.

Your professional image should reflect that growth.

When was the last time you updated your professional headshot?

Here are three signs:

📸 Your headshot is more than 3 years old.

That last one is important.

Do you need a headshot…or do you actually need personal branding?

They're not the same thing.

A professional headshot may be exactly what you need if you're updating LinkedIn, your company bio or another professional profile.

But if you're stepping into a leadership role, your images may need to communicate more than professionalism. They may need to communicate confidence, authority, credibility and approachability.

And if you're an entrepreneur or business owner creating content for your website, social media and marketing, one headshot probably isn't enough.

That's where personal branding comes in.

Before I recommend a session, one of the first things I want to understand is:

He had never had a professional headshot before.

And when he walked into the studio, he was nervous.

So I didn’t expect him to know what to do.

I talked with him.

I explained the process.

And once we got in front of the camera, I guided him through every pose and expression.

Little by little, he relaxed.

Then he saw himself.

“That’s me? I look really good.”

Yes.

That’s you.

One of my favorite parts of what I do isn’t just creating the photograph.

It’s watching someone’s confidence change when they finally see themselves the way everyone else can.
