Eastern Screech Owl, Winnipeg. Only the second time I have ever seen one. He was enjoying a cool but sunny day.

I was so happy to find this fine fellow! I was exploring along one of the local creeks in Winnipeg when I happened to look up, and there he was, looking right back at me. Photographing him was a bit of a challenge, as he was tucked away in some pretty dense foliage, but I managed to find a small opening that gave me a clear view. What a beautiful owl!

The neighbourhood magpie decided the coyote needed supervising. Apparently, owls aren't the only ones who find themselves on a magpie's hit list!

The Pine Grosbeak is one of Canada's largest finches, commonly found in northern boreal forests. While males display beautiful rosy-red plumage, females are more subtly coloured in soft greys with warm golden-brown or olive tones. These gentle, unhurried birds feed on berries, buds and seeds, and are a welcome sight during Alberta's colder months.

Boreal owls are small, rather elusive little owls that can be surprisingly difficult to spot. Their beautiful spotted feathers help them blend into the trees, and those bright yellow eyes are hard to miss once you've found one! They have incredible hearing, which helps them locate small mammals, even beneath the snow. Despite their size, they're very capable little hunters and fascinating birds to watch.
