More your common or garden "Everyday Nature" – lichen in the alley, a house sparrow, the squirrel that is digging up your bulbs, the crow cawing on the wires in the alley. Since receiving my first camera in 1962, I've spent many, many hours looking at the world through a lens. A full-time artist since 2006, I've been selling my work at local Vancouver galleries and markets and online since then. My studio is located in my garden behind my house in East Vancouver. I am lucky to have my daughter, Lily (an accomplished photographer in her own right) as an employee. Edgar (our cat) would hardly consider himself an employee (rather the reverse) but he is an invaluable asset in modelling a deeply relaxed approach to life. My work has been shown in several individual and group shows in Canada and the UK, featured in print (Style at Home, House and Home, Where Vancouver) and on radio (CBC's North by Northwest) and TV (CBC's Living Vancouver). The Cedar Waxwings are still here!
They seem to be staying around longer this year — usually they are here for a couple of days and then off again on the migration flight. Perhaps milder weather is encouraging them to stick around this October. I’d say about the 90% of waxwings I’m seeing are juveniles. The young ones have a grey-brown, somewhat speckled plumage, with less pronounced “Zorro masks” and smaller crests than their parents.
The adults have pale lemon-yellow feathers, more dashing masks and crests, plus the “red wax” points at the tip of the secondary wing feathers, which give these birds their name.
This waxy tangent leads to the two collective nouns for groups of Cedar Waxwings: an “Earful” or a “Museum” (as in Mme Tussaud’s wax museum).

A happy reunion! After leaving home this spring, little Lou came back to hang out with parents Marvin and Mavis in September. And the little white feather marking in his head that allows me to be 100% certain it is him survived moulting season too!

The degree to which seeing Lou every day brightens my day is kind of ridiculous, but there it is ...
Which reminds me of a blog post I’ve been bouncing around in my brain for year: “Crows and Wealth Management.”
The concept relies upon the simple formula of Joy = Wealth
It’s a simple equation, yet one we often get reversed; sometimes it just takes a young crow chasing seeds in a parking lot to help us get it right.

Going up!

A nostalgic aside: That phrase, “going up” always reminds me of the lift (elevator) operator in department stores of old. I remember being a toddler, holding on to my mum’s coat as we went up, up, up, while the sacred incantation was recited … “millinery, haberdashery, ladies lingerie…”
It was so exciting, and a little magical.
