And no, it didn't rain the entire time!

After my last post about two cold, rainy nights photographing the D&SNG RR, I thought I'd mention that the weather wasn't entirely miserable!

At times the clouds parted, revealing a spectacular star-filled sky. Locomotive 481, looks pretty awesome beneath the stars with the rugged San Juans in the background.

A century-old steam locomotive, a beautiful mountain landscape, and a sky full of stars. What's not to love?

And I suppose I should admit to Kenneth Fox and Bobbie Baird that occasionally you can get a pretty good photograph without suffering quite so much!

A scene from the last century, or just last week?

Believe it or not, these pics are from last week! Over the past 15 years, I've photographed the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and locomotive No. 481 in particular, literally dozens of times. But it never gets old. Ironic. After all No. 481 was built in 1925!

On a dark, rainy night in the San Juans, some things are timeless.

What made this two-night shoot more special was sharing it with two of my best photography buddies, Bobbie Baird and Kenneth Fox. Between the cold, the rain, and two nights with virtually no sleep, I reminded them of an old, wise photographer's motto I've been preaching for years: “The more you suffer, the better your pictures!”

And if a little wisdom gets passed around among old friends and even older photographers along the way, well, that's part of the fun!
