Schnitzer, Westergard and K***z Victorious
By: Aaron Reed (AR Racing Media)
I guess they say it’s better late than never. Last night was my second appearance at Grays Harbor Raceway, first time in almost 2 years behind the video camera. It felt great to be doing what I enjoy so much. Weather was perfect, although it was a bit chilly during the evening. The final checkered flag took place at 8:30PM. Videos from the event will be out Wednesday.
First feature event of the evening was the Limited Sprint Cars. 6 cars signed in on the evening. Jeff Westergard of Sedro Woolley and Stanwood’s Lawrence Kirkham shared the front row of the 25 lap feature event. Westergard took the early lead, with Kirkham looking to chase him down. Nate Geister of Tahuya sat in the third position. The caution flag flew for Tim Martin of Shelton, spinning to a stop in turn four. Kirkham’s night ended after a safety issue. Geister moved into second spot, looking to track down Westergard. Bellingham driver Derek Holmwood moved into the third position, battling with Geister early. Westergard set a blistering pace on a very hooked up 3/8 banked raceway. Westergard picked up the win over Geister, Holmwood, Martin and Garrel Powers of Oak Harbor rounded out the top five. Westergard (Westy Racing) picked up the heat race and quick time earlier in the evening, making the night a clean sweep, also an extra $500, winning the Labor Day 360 Sprint Challenge between Skagit Speedway and Grays Harbor Raceway.
The final 360 Summer Challenge Series was set at Grays Harbor Raceway, a series of races between both Skagit and Grays Harbor. Levi K***z of Carnation and Mill Creek’s Cam Smith led the field to the green flag. K***z took the early lead. Smith looked to the outside on the opening lap, but couldn’t make the pass. Colton Heath of Marysville look to work his way into second, battling Smith. Lap 3 saw Heath make a successful pass, setting his sights on K***z. On a long green flag run, Heath started to reel in K***z. Lap 16 saw Olympia driver Destry Miller stop on the backstretch. Miller did continue on. Smith saw issues during the caution, ending his evening. Heath looked to make a shot for the lead in turn one on the restart, but it was K***z who had momentum on the high side. K***z picked up the win over Heath, Destry Miller, Smith and Xan Miller of Olmypia. K***z (LPK Racing ) picked up the heat race win, Heath was quick time.
IMCA Modifieds saw 17 drivers sign in. Montesano’s Jeremy Miller led the field to the green flag. Just as the green flag dropped, the caution saw a multiple car incident in turn four. A second attempt at a complete restart saw Rick Smith of Mt. Vernon take the early lead. Yelm’s John Higgenbottom moved into second, but quickly saw a battle with Kyler Moore of Silverdale. Olympia’s Jeff Hunt moved into second from sixth, looking to track down Smith for the lead. Lap 4 saw Kyler Moore’s night come to an end after slowing to a stop in turn one. Smith led Hunt and Higgenbottom to the green flag. Higgenbottom saw Tumwater’s Tyson Blood bring on a battle for third. Hunt took the lead from Smith, bringing Blood with him. Blood looked to the inside lane multiple times setting up a great battle for the lead. Shelton’s Brenton Schnitzer worked his way through the field from 12th. Hunt continued to lead, putting some slight distance on Blood. A mid race caution saw a battle between the top three. Blood’s night came to an end after mechanical issues caused him to drop to the infield. Hunt and Schnitzer battled for a handful of laps, with Schnitzer taking the lead late. After being caught up in the first lap incident, Jake Sorenson of Aberdeen worked his way into the top three. Schnitzer (Brenton Schnitzer Racing) picked up the win over Sorenson, Hunt, Seabeck’s Craig Moore and Scott Miller of Shelton. Heat race winners were Jeremy Miller, Hunt and Kyler Moore.
Next race for me is too be determined, but hoping to get one maybe two more races in before the season ends.
