Next up in our series of mini pop-up aquariums in collaboration with Rosario Beach Marine Lab and Deception Pass Park Foundation, we will be featuring nudibranchs! We have a few species on loan to display from student researchers who are studying how they may be impacted by climate change. Stop by Tuesday, July 21st from 2-4 PM to see these beautiful neighbors from beneath the waves and chat with local marine scientists.

I’m so excited to finally announce we are bringing back the pop-up aquarium to downtown Anacortes for a third year! This year’s main event will be on July 26th from 12-4 PM on The Patio at Dockside Dogs 501 Commercial Ave Anacortes, WA. This event will still be totally free, but gifts in support of the student travel fund are greatly appreciated.

So grateful to the wonderful folks at Rosario Beach Marine Lab who trusted me with creating this event two years ago, and who supported and championed it to the point of us receiving a $25,000 grant to get dedicated equipment and interpretive signage to keep this event going for many years to come. This grant has also given us the pleasure of commissioning Meg | Invertebabe to illustrate our poster and signage. Thank you so much, Meg!

Also so much thanks to Frannie Bigge, celebrating creativity in all forms who gave this event its original home, and Dockside Dogs 🌭 who are welcoming us back to the space in its new form.

Please help us spread the word!

Which portrait is your favorite? The second one is the original one I did and then I wanted that cute little le***an flag amphipod incorporated somehow and I ended up shifting selfies and playing with it more in the process.

Throwback to two of the Phronima I saw last year! These amphipods are so special and such incredible moms.

Happy Pride! The ocean is q***r and an embodiment of the original Pride flag so I thought it was only fitting to bring all these ocean bodies together into one.

There’s so much I want to be speaking to this month and that I want to share but I’ve also been in the midst of trying to pull together a celebration of life for my father who passed away in October and juggle so many other things in preparation for a very busy summer. I’m hoping to share a few videos maybe next week about some of my favorite q***r narratives in the ocean.

Until then, sending so much love.

Thalassocalyce inconstans, the umbrella comb jelly ☔️🌈

This ctenophore was such an unexpected surprise when I visited in May. This species of comb jellies is all alone in its own order, but sits in Class Tentaculata alongside the lobates and cydippids. If you look closely in the second photo, you can see its two small unbranched tentacles.

If you read the caption, you also get some JA lore - in high school I was the lone violist in the pit orchestra for a production of Singing in the Rain. It was one of the most fun music roles I got to play. I learned something like 130 sheets of music for it.

The picture is from my visit this May with my mom, and the video is from visiting with my dad last February. I’m glad I got to go see them with both of them.
